Greetings, all. I can't tell you how amazed I am to have found this place. hug

Ive been twirling for 8 months now.

I first learned about the "fire-twirling" when I was in Guatemala. I lived there for 3 years and became fascinated with those folks I would meet in hostels and beaches, wherever, who would be spinning sticks, chains, hoops, and ropes.

Unfortunately, I didn't have anyone to tell me about it, or teach me. So I ran a rope through some tennis balls and figured it out for myself. It wasn't until I tried to build a set for fire, and ended up slinging molten steel wool all over my backyard, that I decided to get online and do some research.

Im chuffed! Not only is there a name (POI!!) for this, but people and products I can get a hold of when I need some help. ubblove

(course, now I do feel a lil bit silly, having not done so before. But its all worth it, just to not have to refer to it as "playing with my balls")

Im currently back in Atlanta, GA in the United States. and enough about me. Im off to browse around those adorable free lessons again. Ive already picked up a half-dozen new tricks! weavesmiley

I came into the hobby similarly self inducted so you aren't alone in that aspect. For me it was my keys on a length of chain (a decision that haunts me a bit as I can't find any poi heavy enough for my self taught methods and I now have to relearn everything).

Welcome to the club, don't try the fire stuff before you're ready. How will you know? It varies.

I do fire eating already and am working towards fire spinning, but for me that first time I did everything "for real" scared the ever-loving crap out of me. Then as soon as my routine was over, I was invincible. I had conquered fire and I was a MAN! So I relaxed a bit and my next practice session ended with second degree burns. I became overconfident and one of my body passes went wrong (a body pass involves putting fuel on yourself, lighting it, using your body to "pass" the flame to unlit torch(es), and extinguishing it).

Just be careful, have fun, and never let yourself get cocky when there is fire involved.

Ooh! Thanks for the replies. And the pic! I've been looking for that squid for a while. It owes me money. wink

@Caitiff: Thanks for the warning re: fire. Trust me, Im a cautious fella. I wont be trying the flames until I am more confident in my skills.

I just finished getting the hang of the 5-bt forward and reverse weaves since joining. Im now working on some simple behind the back tricks. Though from last night's practice session, I may have just postponed children for a bit. >_<
