I was on a bus today.
Thinking about people getting older and how we'll be later on.
Some people you can just see what they'll be when they'er sixty*, and that led me onto thinking how conversations will go.
[Insert stereotyped old person dialouge here]
"Arrr Becky, pass the sugar will ya,"
"I dunno Sabina, might play with ya kidneys..."
"Shut up or Bozzie'll look funny at you,"
And it struck me. These names, that are now so apparently youthful and contempoary will sound oldfashioned some day.. That means there are going to be a whole new (or more likely recycled) collection of names that kids are gonna have, and many at once if I know anything of fashions in nameing.
So I'm curious, what kindsa names do you all like enough to land someone with for life, and do you have any plans to do so should little twirlers ever emerge? I'd rather like to know what sorts of things we'll be calling those that come after.
For myself I like stylish, dynamic old names like Dorian and Giacomo. Marie and Alexi and Andre and Emiline. Steve's got an oddly energetic ambience too, which is rather more modern sounding than Jaques which I favour too, as is Charlie. Lots of other names I like enough to pass on to someone small in need of one, though oddly enough only three more come to mind. Three people I like well enough and in the right ways to name someone for their influence, and by a happy coincidence they all post here. Yes dearies, our very own Ilsanya who is also called Saan, FSA who is Taya and Raro who is Critt are the only ones in all the world I'd name someone after.

My Nan and Dad both used to call me Apple as a nickname when i was a kid, so from a young age i always quite fancied using it as maybe a middle name for a girl if i ever have kids....unfortunately that bleddy Gwyneth beat me to it....grumble...grumble....
I was also going to be called Melita after me gran but apparently Kelly suited me better!

I was named 'David' because it was phonetically similar to 'Dai Wai' which translated means 'big tummy' because weighing 7lbs at birth was considered fat...
Parents certainly gave me a good start in the self-esteem stakes...

I was going to be Francoise - dad couldn't pronounce it, thank God!
He can't pronounce my mum's name either (Spelt Myrna, pronounced 'Mi-en-na' tho) , and they've been married for over 30 years! He still calls he 'murna'.
I really, really like my mum's name too, but don't think I could name my kids after her, it would seem a bit wierd.

My brother and sister were determined that I would be a boy so I have cards written to William Edward telling me what a champion boxer I'd be
I ended up with Caroline Zoe and have great fun with people not being able to guess my middle name from the initial.
There's a question - would you take into account what the initials spelt out? My sister is A.N.T. now she's married, whilst I'm rather chuffed that though my name will change, my initials won't.
I'd always liked the name Charlotte best, but I gave that name to my little neice two years ago. It suits her very well.

i have 3 boys 2 have older names michael kevin james and brandon paul
the 3rd son has an old irish name shay joshua now it was going to be spelt chez but because i had told the family what his name was going to be before he was born but not the spelling my nan sent me a card to the hospital spelling it shay and the hospital band had shay written on it si i gave in and spelt it shay. the problem i still have is people asking his name and thinking its shane, now when hes older and the hearing of the older people isnt that good will he still have the same problem??? that makes me worry as i get so annoyed when people call him shane grrrr
oh and people cant ever say my name daniella-marie ppl pronounce it (dan u elle) so thats why dani will just stick

In unrelated news, I'm always a bit torn when one of my students has an uncommon name. Some uncommon names are beautiful and interesting but some kids become traumatized when their names are constantly misprounounced.

Boys - Kaelan, Brodie, Luka.
Girls - kiralea, Shaylah, Kahleah.

Nora in the english pronounciation is a nice girlname. Normaly there are not so many nice girlnames.

My dad is half danish, and if i get married ill loose my danish surname (hansen) so my mum gave me a scandanavian forename. she also gave me jane, in case i didnt like Freya.
At the time my name was unusual, and not many people in this country had heard of it before. I have an unusual name because my mum liked having a different name. She is called Coral.
Although she did break the mould with me, most of the women in my family are named after colours, and im not. there were some unhappy relatives when they found out i was a Freya.
I feel sorry for children at school when there are a few of them with the same name. we always had Tom1, Tom2 or Tom 3, Amy T or Amy D. Its a bit harsh really.
as for the spellings. i know a girl who is currently a Gemma. and is trying to get it changed by deed poll to Jeameaux (still pronounced the same).
i think some alternative spellings are fine because of different cultures and the ways that names have developed over time. but....... it can get a bit out of hand.

There were 300 kids in my school between the ages of 12-18 and there were 4 four "Nicole"'s and 1 of me. Bleh.
I shouldn't complain though, my sister got called Dana Joleen! She passed the bad name tradition on to her offspring... two boys - Gabriel Mark and Silas Orion. And two girls - Noelle Farrah Emery and Eden Cyreal. Oh Boy are they going to hate her....

I agree with the names suiting people kind of philosophy, it certainly works with kittens... although given my kitten naming record, it's highly possible that if i have a child that it might end up being called dribbly or something...
