fill money bags with sand then seal up with a band or something. You can make your own weight then. personally i'll stick with tennis balls -thye hurt less

I use (un-popped) popcorn in water-proof bags for my sock poi. If you leave a little air in the bags, hitting yourself hurts less than with tennis balls.

The problem with rice (and other small grains) is that they pack together quite tightly. If things are mor tightly meshed they will have less give in them so it'll hurt you more when you hit yourself. That's why I like popcorn. It's a reasonable size grain and being quite smooth, slips past each other. So when you hit yourself, it sort of moulds around whatever it hit...

Usual things you might find in a pair of socks:

Rice/grains in a balloon/bag

Water in balloons

Sand in abag

Juggling balls

hackey sacks

Plastic filler pellets (I use these with LED lights for glow sock poi)

All of the above can be weighted to desire, and reweighted when wanted and are forgiving on accidental impact. All good options.

I despise tennis balls for use as practice poi.

what weight does everyone spin in socks, tennis balls weigh around 65grams each and glow poi weigh about 80grams i think. would 75grams be a decent weight of popcorn seeds?

I think mine are 120g juggling balls (from oddballz), but I didnt buy them so not 100% on that. Anyway they are fairly weighty and squishy so dont hurt that much when I hit myself (except in the obvious place but hit yourself there and pretty much anythings gonna smart).

If the rice is in balloons then the whole thing deforms when it hits - I've dropped a few rice filled balloons that squashed almost flat when they hit the floor.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Or you could use lacrosse or bounce juggling balls- they're heavy but they feeeeeel wonderful.

Or you could be psycho lemming and keep a small planet in each poi (heavy but lovely smile)

i just hit myself in the face about 5 times in the space of about 5 minutes!

PAH! i have come to the conclusion that my poi are too long..and too light.

also, i need something that hurts less than a tennis ball in the face.

im going to try the rice/seeds thing.

Because I got my chains setup before I bought the fire heads, and cause I was pissed off with the light tennis ball poi I'd been using, I just screwed two blocks of wood to then end of the chains for practice.

Hurt a bit the first few times I got hit, but I don't hit myself in the nads anymore, and I kinda learned to take the weight out of an impact when I do hit myself, so it made fire poi much more relaxing.

You're mad Geoff! No sane person would do that!! Also, having poi that you're terrified to spin is going to really inhibit the learning process frown

poi chuks sound quite fun, could be the new martial arts weapon. Personally though i find that 130grams of popcorn seeds (tried this last night) is too heavy in socks for me. Not that i cant lift em or anything, they just hurt more than tennis balls in the balls

I suspect it depends how fast you spind them. Heavier poi means slower spinning which makes learning moves easier (in my opinion). You're not the first person to say my poi are heavy though... just try it with a little less weight! smile

I've got 120g juggling balls in socks and have been finding them much easier to learn isolations with than my other lighter poi.

I like the popcorn idea though, might try that so I don't have to keep dismantling my sock poi when I want to juggle!
