Hello people.

I just got back from a wicked holiday in Thailand where I watched loads of Fire Shows, and decided to pick up some poi for myself. I bought tassle ones, and fire ones for when I get better. It was really good, as the bloke who sold them gave us a free hours lesson on poi spinning. I'm not doing anything special yet, but it keeps the cats entertained in the garden.

I first learned to cross my arms infront of me, and then went on to a front weave. I was then taught a move they called the helecopter.

I have practiced these back at home, and have them pretty solid. I'm trying to get the reverse weave going, but need a little more practice. I can also do the buzzsaw. I hope to learn loads more moves from this site, and to pick up some tips from you veterans.

As for a bit of a history, poi was going to grab my attention from the moment I saw it. Stuff like that does. I was given a unicycle for my 11th birthday which i still ride today. I can also do basic juggling.
I also play in a band, so being able to do poi before our shows would be awesome.

I look forward to talk to you all

Mafro

So can people suggest what i should learn next? Is there any basic moves I should learn first, and what are the best first moves to link together?

I like butterflies and butterfly related moves. Gives you something to do with your arms if you haven't built up a lot of upper body strength yet to give them a semi-break, and, to the untrained eye, it looks really hard or just elegant.

Also, butterflies just seem to be a cool thing to do if someone stops you to ask you a question if you poi in public spaces like a park. Once you get a feel for where they're supposed to be, you can basically ignore them for a long while and talk to people without focusing in on the poi. It's a neat trick. Especially when you start throwing in butterly variations.

Well, that, and when some idiot says, "Oh, that's so easy, anyone can do it," you can almost bet that they'll crash everytime, making for hours of hilarity.

"So long and thanks for all the fish."

Cool. I just went and had a play in the garden for 10 mins and perfected the butterfly. I can also do it in one hand.

Thing is my poi are on chains and unless i hold them just right the chain rubs against me hand when doing the one handed butterfly, and thats not confortable.

What next?
