Hey folks
im in the market for a new external hardrive as between two laptops and a small size pockey drive (30gb), We are maxed out for space. And we are going moving country soon and dont want to take a huge case of cd's dvd's with us either.
This is whats available in ireland on one site. Probably the cheapest.

and some of them are very nice. though most of them are two big (up to 20cm long) and heavy for what i really had in mind.
The western digital ones are nice but the nice ones only got to 80gb. I do like the one witht he built in card readrer though. As our video camera is SD card...
Any recomendations? It doesnt have to be available in ireland. It would just be handy

I have this and it's done me very well.
I like Lacie a lot, the drive is fast and runs well with very little noise. The market changes so much with hard drives, but I think my next drive will be a Lacie as well.

you could buy a laptop hard drive, say 100gb or what ever sze you like, and then buy a 2.5 inch hard drive case.
This means you have a small hard drive, aound 2x5 inches, and it will not require a power supply for when you wish to use it....
plus the bonus to this when you get it home, you can swap it into your laptop, and have a bigger drive in that, and put your smaller drive (what ever size your laptop drive it, say 40 gb) in the case, andthen you have a 40GB drive you can take to work, and use as a usb pen, for cheep

thats ok dude,
tbh there is little diff, if you are vid editing, its not just the hard drive that makes an impact, teh card you are using, your amount and speed of ram, chip architecture, and yes drive speed can affect it all in different ways

In short SATA can be faster then IDE and have more features.
For video editing, as mech said there are more things to worry about than IDE/SATA. Get the fastest drive you can with the biggest cache. Some (most?) motherboards don't have SATA on so IDE might be a better way to go.

That looks nice, although I would always want a bigger drive.
Also, don't forget about backup! It's a good idea to get 2 smaller drives and use 1 for backing up the other.

If video editing go for Firewire instead of USB, as it doesn't tie up the CPU so much when transferring. If you've got a new system there may even be an external SATA port, or you can get SATA expansion cards that have external ports.

i did that recentily, got a 300GB maxtor from www.novatech.co.uk and a caddy from https://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Hard_Drive_Accessories.html
only cost me £130 for a USB2 and Fire wire external hard drive and thats including Vat and delvery
