Hey folks

im in the market for a new external hardrive as between two laptops and a small size pockey drive (30gb), We are maxed out for space. And we are going moving country soon and dont want to take a huge case of cd's dvd's with us either.

This is whats available in ireland on one site. Probably the cheapest.

https://www.komplett.ie/k/kl.asp?bn=10098&sortBy=p&minprice=&maxPrice=

and some of them are very nice. though most of them are two big (up to 20cm long) and heavy for what i really had in mind.

The western digital ones are nice but the nice ones only got to 80gb. I do like the one witht he built in card readrer though. As our video camera is SD card...

Any recomendations? It doesnt have to be available in ireland. It would just be handy wink

I have this and it's done me very well.

I like Lacie a lot, the drive is fast and runs well with very little noise. The market changes so much with hard drives, but I think my next drive will be a Lacie as well.

How much did the shipping cost....

Any more info about the advantages of this guy? Apart from the crazy price smile And its named by Porche wink

It says they wont ship outside the US without an autorization form. Did it all go smoothly?

cheers sym

I got it from ebuyer:

So i have no idea about getting from Lacie direct, I would guess they ship to ireland.

as for the advantages, well, it's a big [censored] off hard drive, and that about as good as it gets from my point of view ubblol

It is nice to own 'a Porche' though wink

i know that you can take a regular old large internal drive for a desktop (say, 200/300 gb) and then add a casing around it to make it an external drive, that attaches via USB

i'll need to dig up the link though

And if you do it with a Seagate drive you get a 5 year warranty. I don't buy any other manufacturers drives any more.

If you want to keep it as small as possible, you could find an enclosure for a laptop drive, as they're now available up to 160Gb, although they cost more than regular drives.

https://www.scan.co.uk
has a really good selection of enclosures and drives, including a 160GB laptop drive, although it's a bit pricey, as it's new technology.

if you wnat small and compact -

you could buy a laptop hard drive, say 100gb or what ever sze you like, and then buy a 2.5 inch hard drive case.

This means you have a small hard drive, aound 2x5 inches, and it will not require a power supply for when you wish to use it....

plus the bonus to this when you get it home, you can swap it into your laptop, and have a bigger drive in that, and put your smaller drive (what ever size your laptop drive it, say 40 gb) in the case, andthen you have a 40GB drive you can take to work, and use as a usb pen, for cheep smile

Value for money and capacity (>80gb), you're best off going with a 3.5" HD enclosure (mine's a Zoom Extreme ZX 8 firewire USB2.0 combo.. I was amazed it even had it's own cooling fan), and a 300GB 7200rpm drive. It's going to be the size of a large novel, but it's still portable.

Notebook 2.5" harddrives tend to be doubly expensive, not to mention slower than the 3.5" drives, and you'd be lucky to find a 100gb 5400rpm drive.

Also a tip. A premade external harddrive is going to cost more than buying the casing and drive separately. For casings, other than the Zoom Extreme one that I have, you can also look at Vantec's Nexstar range, which are pretty decent and not too pricey.

All in all, my ZX8 and a 300gb drive set me back about AUD260 (about 100 squid..) so I think I did pretty well. Probably cost a bit more where you're at..

Good luck!

thats ok dude,

tbh there is little diff, if you are vid editing, its not just the hard drive that makes an impact, teh card you are using, your amount and speed of ram, chip architecture, and yes drive speed can affect it all in different ways smile

In short SATA can be faster then IDE and have more features.

For video editing, as mech said there are more things to worry about than IDE/SATA. Get the fastest drive you can with the biggest cache. Some (most?) motherboards don't have SATA on so IDE might be a better way to go.

If I was thinking of buying a case for a 2.5" drive, where could I find one...? I searched eBuyer a few times but didn't get anything, has it got a name other than "2.5" Hard Drive Case"?

Nice one guys

I really would love to buy something with 300 or five hundred gigs. but for travelling they are just so big... even the enclosures.

2.5" enclosures are small and cool but the drives are spendy.

I might go for this one

https://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=315149

Its very small and has 120gb. I alrady have one the same size as it and its 30gb.

Maybe im just being crazy by wanting so much space. but then i want to edit video. so how much free space to i really need?

That looks nice, although I would always want a bigger drive.

Also, don't forget about backup! It's a good idea to get 2 smaller drives and use 1 for backing up the other.

doopie: If you're going to use the drive regularly (as in almost always on + plenty of reading/writing), I'd strongly suggest an enclosure with it's own cooling fan. I lost a 2.5" drive to overheating. It just started clicking and died. If you're doing video editing, I'd go with a 3.5" just because you can get faster, bigger capacity, bigger cache drives for a lot less money too..

If video editing go for Firewire instead of USB, as it doesn't tie up the CPU so much when transferring. If you've got a new system there may even be an external SATA port, or you can get SATA expansion cards that have external ports.
