hmmmm.... does anyone know where i can get free music downloads - i managed to spend thirty quid on itunes last week so i'm looking for a free (or at least cheaper) alternative!!

Try subscribing to some podcasts, some of then have lots of music in them, from the podsafe music network.
Other than that, just learn to buy less music... :P

i know but its so addictive - i thought i'll just buy a couple of things and leave it at that - mind you onced i've maxed my credit card out i cant buy anymore anyway!!

hehe, I find a lot of great sharing communities on livejournal.com
just sign up for a journal if you dont already have one and then do a search through the communities under music etc., there is a great one called "AlbumLove" where people request albums they are wanting and almost always someone has it and uploads it for them..
& also I recommend limewire

Which i think is stirling advice and chose to ignore the "guidelines" entirely

Well, I would NOT reccomend any free music, although I know many programs that are P2P based, these are in fact illegal, and they are finding ways to catch people, and hand out some hefty fines. I will not give you any sites, as it is illegal, but also, there are many risks in P2P (Peer to Peer) programs. Viruses, Worms, Spyware, Adware, Trojans, Keygens, Keyloggers, and such can be downloaded accidently, that you can't find with just any virus scan, my friend finally got $350 of virus software, and had 107 spyware, and adware related viruses.
DO NOT RISK YOUR COMPUTER UNLESS YOU WOULD LIKE A 50 POUND PAPER-WEIGHT!

Please do a search... The best search button is the one on the navigation bar, as opposed to the one with Google in front of it.
Enjoy - I'm certain you'll find loads of threads on this very subject... which in itself is borderline due to illegality of downloading.
