Posted: Recently a friend loaded 3 .jpgs from a USB key onto my iBook desktop. I have been able to copy them into iPhoto, but cannot do nothing else with them, ie rename them, delete them, or move them to another folder. When I try the message comes up: 'the operation cannot be completed because the item blah.jpg is locked.' Locked??? wtf?
I've had a look through the properties as they show up on Finder, menu items in Preview.. Help menus.. nothing mentions a jpeg being locked, or how to unlock it. Any clues (OsX relevant only, thanks) of how i can unlock/get rid of them?

Posted: press Apple i while the file is highlighted (brings up the information for the file) click on ownership & permissions (at the bottom of the pop-up) and check that you have read and write priviledges if you don't, click on details and change your access details (will need your admin pwd for this) hope this helps

Thanks so much... I had previously tried 'get info' (= Apple i) via the menu bar, but I had done it when the jpeg was open, not when it was just highlighted. (Doesn't come up with as much info)
Did as you suggested and there was lots more info and indeed a little 'locked' check box right there; didn't even have to go into the 'ownerships and permissions' section. Yay, sorted, have tamed the wild jpeg!!
