Ok, first post, here goes nothing...

Well I signed up to the forum about 3 weeks ago so i suppose I'd better give a little introduction, history, etc.

I got into poi about 3 weeks ago after deciding I need a new hobby / pastime to keep me occupied. I go clubbing about once a month and was introduced to glow-sticking by some friends. I seemed to do ok at that so Poi seemed like a logical progression.

So off I went in search of Poi, I ended up buying some fire poi from a shop that was under new management. They wanted to change stock so I got them cheap (£15). Although hard and painful to practice with, I at least had something with swivels and chains to play with and I seem to have learnt a few basics.

Yesterday I bought some soft glow poi and I think I'm going to find these much easier to practice new moves with as I'm not so afraid of hurting myself. However I don't think I'm really "getting it".

So far it's taken me 3 weeks to learn learn (in order of confidence).

Good,

Forwards spin in time,

Backwards spin in time,

Split time forwards,

Split time backwards,

Basic Butterfly,

Forwards weave,

Low or hip turn,

High turn (+high turn with a beat behind the head)

Moderate,

Giant butterfly,

Overhead Butterfly (have to leave 3 beats before repeating or I tangle),

Bad,

Alternate butterfly (I can do the right hand but not the left)

Can't do at all,

One handed butterfly,

Thread the needle,

Haven't tried,

Anything I haven't mentioned above.

This morning I have finally cracked the backwards weave. My first proper backwards trick apart from turns. I found that really confusing. The main problem seems to be starting it off. Once I'm going I can keep it going for quite a while. The main thing was learning to get into it without batting myself in the face I suppose.

So anyway, as I say I'm not very good. So should all this come naturally or is it practice practice practice, I fear the later. I seem to be able to do some very basic moves at the moment but I just can't get a flow going. I have to concentrate to get into a move and then out of it. The move itself (once set up) tends to just happen, it takes care of itself if you see what I mean. At the moment when I practice I mainly just keep going through all the moves I know again and again and again, so at least I'm getting good at those independently.

I suppose the main thing I want to be able to do is link moves together. Get from one move to another seamlessly without having to stop or go into a basic swing first.

So does this come with time? Should I be able to seamlessly link moves together by now? Or I am I hopeless case with no rhythm and should I get out while i know what's good for me before i start going round in circles (pun intended)?

Thanks for reading if you get this far and any advice is welcome.

Done poi for 2 weeks and can't hardly do anything backward! I'm jalous!
But can do the 3 beat wave! Yoohoo! Trying myself on the 5 beat now and backward weave, but my brain got difficulties working backward i think lol.

Shoot for the moon and even if you miss you will land among the stars.

Backwards is hard, i've just boshed myself on the nose .
i only figured it out first time this morning so i might not be the best one to tell you how to do it. it's still a bit sloppy atm.

Tried it last night and just kept hitting myself :-(

However i've just this second before sitting down after boshing my nose managed to do a 3beat weave backwards into a 3 beat weave forwards with no breaks inbetween.

Woo, I'm so happy!

Now if only I could do it again...

Hey man, welcome.

It don't matter how long it takes to learn the moves its just practice i'm afraid i've only been spinning for a few months and have been teaching myself which takes longer to learn.

Thats a fair few moves for only three weeks!!!

wink

Whatever happened to my green and pleasant land?

welcome to the madness. ive been posting for three weeks, i think ive missed work, and about 140 hours of sleep. boy is this site addictive.

anyway, hello fiow, nice avatar. sounds like your gonna be a fast learner, its the only way!!! but then when you havent learned much in a while it gets kinda boring, well thats how it is for me. i LOVE poi tho, and know ill never get that bored of it because of the 'sound of a babbling brook' feeling i get from it.

Hiya Gayle,

Doubt it, can't ever remember being in Falmouth ever. Anyway, nice to meet you. From your tag it sounds like if I were ever to get round to Falmouth then I'd be making a bee line for your tent ;-)

Thanks for the welcome Aryth,

I've just been busy teaching myself btw. I don't actually know any other poi'ers. I suppose that might come with time too :-)

Oh and the Avatar, well that was either me with glow sticks and a long exposure setting on my camera or one of my friends glowsticking and me with the camera. I really can't remember which way, it was a good night though ubblol
