Or when kids hold them and play with them and they start bubbling.

I recon slugs and snails can move at lightspeed in the right conditions, so long as no-one is looking at them. They move huge distances when I turn my back on them, if they're on a nice wet lawn.

Why has no-one made a horror movie about carnivorous snails?

one of the kids stepped on a snail by accident and bless him he spent the next about five minutes sat there trying to figure out how to put the shell back on before giving it to an adult to do.

That's so cute!!

I hate stepping on them as well...however I do like throwing them. Especially in Romania where my students are scared of them and are distracted from their work because they are staring at one (yes, i used to let my students work outside)...so i picked it up and threw it away. only to be told by one of my students that God would smite me. I told him God would smite him for ignoring authorty...on second thoughts, that was probably a mean thing to say to an 11 year old!

i would have changed ***** to phallus, and claire to petey Petey

Snails in fishtanks are a bit like cockroaches, but slower. You turn on the lights and they start dropping off the glass.

Garden snails make pretty patterns on my tent, and like to congregate under the flysheet when it's 3 in the morning and all misty.

I'm always throwing snails into a tasty looking patch of plants if they're caught out on the pavement smile

it is a strange thing. stepping on snails. i usually hop around to avoid them, making sure they don't get squished. otherwise i feel very mean. they are very interesting creatures, you know. they appear simple.. but you know, they are interesting, like most creatures infact. they are hermaphrodites, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs, some have been known to live up to 15 years, and also cannot hear.

anyway.

whats the difference (other than you paid someone else did the dirty dead for you), and why is it more distressing, to stand on a snail or eat meat? They both involve unnessecary death.

The difference is I don't eat a snail after I tread on it, but I eat a fish if I catch it. Both can be deemed unnecessary, but (don't know if you agree with me or not) a death for no purpose whatsoever, where the body is wasted, is worse to me than one where it is not.
