Has anyone had any problems carrying their sticks around?
They must be classed as offensive weapons, but obviously we do have a good a perfectly honest reason for having them with us.
I can remember a friend was once coming out of Camden station when the police arrested him for lewd behaviour. Only joking... they almost arrested him and confiscated his stick as they deemed it an "offensive weapon". It took him 30 minutes to argue and prove the police wrong.
What I dont understand is why would anyone have a weapon with lovely big padded wicking on each end though....
Has anyone else had any hassle with sticks in regards to the police?

i know of a girl in newcastle who's group were told they couldnt carry around their sticks. they just made staff bags and the problem went away
never had a problem in Eire though

Ive got a camping chair bag I use which I foudn at the Reading festival.
Its durable, got pocketses on the outside, and my 1.5m sticks only poke out by about 20 cm at the top. But this isnt a thread about staff bags.

mmm...ok sorry, but good idea anyway.
I almost had my staffs taken away from me on firewords night last year. I wasn't even playing with them and they got really annoyed.

you're not allowed to wander round the streets wearing a hockey mask and carrying an ice hockey stick but if you put them into bags and are on your way to/from practice or a game then its cool.

i got stopped by the police on the way out of shepherds bush tube station on the way to a spinning workshop once.
but i had no sticks on me - just juggling balls and poi and they found something much more interesting in my bag to talk to me about anyway...
damn the police and their cute golden retrievers.
if i had lived in the states i would have been able to sue for violation of due process.
but that's another story too

I used to use swords and Jo Staffs in martial arts (so they really were offensive weapons), all our weaponry had to be carried in bags when we went outside the training area. Think it's a law just to reassure the public that you are not intending to suddenly start hitting people. Nobody at the leisure centre was ever bothered if we walked about with staffs though.

i'll just say, the police are not my favourite institution and leave it at that i think
if i ever got stopped whilst carrying a stick bag and caught flack from police over it, i would mention that i'm legally allowed to carry an assembled shotgun around the street in nothing more than a zip up leather carry case.
i have to have a good reason (going to or from a shoot) and have a shotgun certificate.
compared to that, a couple of firestaffs should seem pretty harmless by comparison.

Can't say that I've ever had a problem with the police and fire props, they turned up one evening where I run a small fire workshop, local amenity park, for which I have secondary permision to use etc, as I recall I was going through some fire breathing demonstrations at the time, with an amused look on their face they simply asked if I considered what I was doing as being safe behaviour.
The only other time, was when I was unloading the car, several conatiners of parafin, came out first, followed by a rucksack containing smaller fire props, I hear this car pull up, assuming it was others turning up for the meet, I then proceeded to dump out of the vehcle four fire staffs, rope dart, several six foot bo staffs, and two kendo sticks, when I turned around one of them had got out and was simply looking at stuff on the floor.

I tend to consider it good practice to put a call through to the local police and fire departments when I'm organising a large practice, so I'm well known, probably makes a difference i don't know.

hehehe i have a good one.
i was in canterbury.
one night we got horribly hammered in town. ucof dissappeared home due to premature wastedness. Jon, its that night u got that huge
street sign, amongst other things
so there i was stumbling home on my own cause the rest decided to go to some crappy club, and i was broke. So im in the middle of canterbury high street and what do i see? some girl spinning firechains. So i walk up and start talking to them. When she gave me the lit poi and i started spinning, 2 cops come around the corner. The cops must have seen 3 wasted people smoking a spliff and playing with fire and all that... But the only thing they did was asking us to walk around the corner and spin there because there was a large group of wasted guys walking down the street and they didnt want them to get hurt by our chains....
I was really surpised that we didnt get into huge trouble....

lol well we had the cops called on our meet on friday night because we do it under a bridge, someone saw smoke coming from under the bridge and freaked out.. the cop thought it was a cool thing to be doing, provided we were playing safely.

police stopped me in stoke about a month ago, i was carrying my aerotech staff in a wrapped up piece of cloth, spinning it about as i skipped up to the cashpoint ..
two off em stopped me asked me what it was and for, i turned it on pretended drunkenly to be a ninja and they let me go about my buisness, they continued drinking their tea

I reckon my staff could ause some serious damage, it's a home-made on with bolts poking out of the kevlar and the jagged metal ends of the staff sticking out the ends. I've been told that if I'm attacked dont twirl it, jab it in their faces.

How about at airports? Has anyone had problems checking in staffs, or used wicks which clearly smell like an explosive substance?
I've flown with fire poi in and out of about 8 countries with no problems so far, but I'm always a little wary, especially if there are sniffer dogs.

I own just a normal weapons permit for anything that looks remotely dangerous in my performance. In some states and other countries the police do provide a theatrical weapons permit, if they don't theres no harm in applying for a normal one. Worth checking out.

ryanair have no record of receiving them and gave him a claim form to fill out on our way back. ryanair do not take responsibility for lost 'outsized' luggage and make you sign a waiver when checking it in so he's not gonna get a penny unless he bought insurance. b*stards.
i had to take the rice out of my sock poi at the airport last week too. it took forever..... and then the security guard didn't even bother to ask what they were....

in Australia you cant fly with them at all, either you pay tonns to have them sent especially or you borrow other peopleswhen you arrive(or buy new one, but that costs)

i've had rather alot of trouble with the police recently
a while ago it just used to be oh we've had reports of someone throwing flaming tennis balls around etc, some seriously rediculous ideas of what we were doing lol
but recently i have had alot of trouble, when i came back from uberstaff, which was insanely amazing, i whent spinning on the cahtedral green where i always spin. it was a lovely sunny day, a college day, lots of people around and about 20 mins into my lil spin these three lil po po's came and said whats this then, and argued alot with me over whether it was safe to do with so many peoople around, my arguement was of course if they walk into it they deserve to be hit
