Ok magic mushrooms are finally being all out banned as a CLASS A drug along with Crack and Heroin:

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4105883.stm

While it is perfectly legal to rig votes in the UK:

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4410743.stm

hmmm.... Politicians have the time to make Mushrooms illegal but not to sort out making election rigging illegal.

What do you think, I think I've just become a little more cynical umm

the only problem with your comment is election rigging IS illegal and the people doing it where caught. im just curious to see if the government learns anything and stops the postal votes

also found it amusing to see that they will try to stop people selling fresh magic 'shrooms cant see the point because it will just be forced underground and become a LOT more dangerous with people trying to pick their own and possibly poisoning themselves instead.

I shall quote the article above about the legality of vote rigging:

Written by: bbc

The Birmingham Labour leader, Sir Albert Bore, wrote to Mr Blair saying: "At present, in relation to the handling of postal ballot papers, the law is so general that almost anything is legal."

There is a striking example of that. The ballot papers seized by the police from the warehouse were handed over to election officials, who decided they had no reason to reject them and included them in the count.

The judge commented to the Returning Officer that her function was nil.

"If something seems wrong with the postal ballot papers," he said, "you have no powers or resources to ferret around to see if the votes are legitimate."

So yeah it seems that while technically vote rigging is "bad" it isn't actually illegal. While technically mushrooms were "bad" while they weren't actually illegal. The government had the time to fix the mushrooms but not the vote rigging.

This law was passed here in Denmark a few years ago.. Quite silly in my opinion-as they grow right outside our doors hehe
I tink by forbidding them they attracted more of the "wrong" people's attention, mabe even curiosity..It passed after a kid on mushrooms went loony and killed an old lady. The whole issue of teenagers and mushrooms were blown up big time in the media, and all the politicians went off their shoes to make this prohibition as fast as possible .. It's my impression that after then, it's even more common to see kids from all kinds of subcultures using psychedelics, when it used to be only a part of certain groups' life..

yes amy... but as you've already mentioned you'll still be able to buy grow kits which are cheap easy and provide for plentiful shrooms! smile only trouble is those lovely non-cubensis hawaiin are gonna get rare as they aren't easy to grow. on the flipside though we may see a return in the availbility of liberty caps and certain other hallucinogens which seem to have got a bit scarce during this whole mushroom bonanza phase... not that i'd ever ingest any kind of naturally occuring plant which the government told me not to, cos that'd be wrong, irresponsible and just plain uncivilised... ubbangel

As far as I know Salvia Divinorum is still legal biggrin, think it's mainly because less people have heard about it and there's been less of a craze... mind you, now shrooms are facing legislation god only knows what will come next.

Mushrooms illegal? Surely grow kits will be made illegal too if this is so... *rushes to find books on spore-prints and shroom-farming*

Might see you there, Mark!

I haven't taken shrooms for over a year now, that way they stay special to me. Last time I was so happy, everything was beautiful and it was like pilling but more real. I've seen so many people lose themselves and find themselves again with the help of this fungus, it truly is a teacher for the soul. My boyfriend used to be hooked on Coke really badly, he nearly destroyed his life but a revelation whilst tripping saved him (it really did save him, I doubt he'd be alive today if he hadn't took those shrooms and had that experience, although it was unpleasant for him at the time.)

people can choose to ruin their life with alcohol so why oh why do they seem to think that we shouldn't be allowed to have some fun with naturally occuring drugs such as musshies and weed.

The government should have no right to tell us what we can and can't intoxicate our own bodies with as long as we don't harm anyone else.

This is all going to work out badly for the government, people will grow they're own mushrooms, people will sell these mushrooms, and their illegality will have a moth/flame like relationship to younger young rebelious teens.

because they have a duty to protect the public :P

also its harder to get taxes out of an intoxicated person

i suppose its also because if addictive substances more potent than nicotine were available then the people who distributed those would have a hell of a lot of power - not so true with natural drugs but say LSD which needs to be made in a lab - if a company made a highly addictive drug and had the patent rights to it they'd have a massive amount of power over the people who took it.

I don't think anyone chose to ruin their life with alcohol (or with tobacco which probably ruins far more lives).

It's the nature of many drugs that, by the time obvious damage is starting to occur, the ability to make choices and objective judgements concerning use is also seriously impaired.

It's easy to attach to the hypocrisy of alcohol and nicotine being legal while other drugs, generally considered less harmful; are banned.

But, it seems to me, that a ban on alcohol and nicotine is, at this time, not feasible- due to the degree to which they are (unfortunately) embedded into our culture/economy.

Maybe it's some comfort to those pained by the apparent hypocrisy, that, if alcohol or nicotine were newly discovered drugs, they would be banned on the same grounds that other drugs are.

I don't care one way or the other if mushrooms, or any other drug, are legal or illegal; I just find it very sad that many of the people in our culture are so ill-at-ease with their place in this world, that they feel the need to use this stuff (whether it be alcohol, weed, nicotine, mushrooms or whatever).

Sadder still, that of those who do experiement or choose to use them, a fair minority will end up with seriously damaged lives.

Have you ever considered the fact that people do these things because they are at ease with their place in this world?

Life is experience, and drugs are just another thing to experience; it shouldn't be up to someone so far removed as Tony Blair from the scene to tell people what they can and can't ingest.

As long as you maintain a high degree of control, and keep it, there shouldn't be a problem at all. You'd be suprised at how many do actually keep control. Outsiders see the words "I'm in control" as the first stage of addiction, this is still true, but it doesn't go to the next stage for everyone.

Just my judgement from years of using drugs myself, and my (hopefully) objective observations of others who use drugs (by drugs I'm talking about acohol, weed, tobacco, LSD, mushrooms etc, etc).

There are plenty of people who do keep it within limits, and don't end up destroying their lives.

Then again, there's a substantial minority who can't seem to control it, and do end up (maybe twenty years down the line) fairly messed up.

My honest opinion, from what I've seen, is that people who are happy, and content with their place in life, do not use drugs.

There's plenty of people who believe that they are content, and believe that they use drugs to enhance their experience.

My opinion is that they are, in the majority of cases, mistaken i.e. they take drugs to make up for what they perceive as a void within.

To many, that will sound incredibly arrogant. But I've seen a lot of stuff to do with drugs over a lot of years and I've seen both sides of it.

In short, IMO, I'm in a position where I can make some kind of objective judgement.

And that judgement isn't me saying that drugs are bad, or that they should be illegal, it's me saying that, IMO, drugs are taken in an attempt to cover up, or fill, a lack of something.

And that people who actually take drugs, are not in the best postion to understand or make sense of the reasons they do so.

I can say with almost 100% certainty, that an individual who regularly uses drugs, will, if they move to a drug free-life, not only find that life to be as good as before, but considerably better.

(I'm not here talking about abstaining/attempting to quit; rather about becoming fully free of the need to use them i.e. having a very good understanding of the reasons they took drugs in the first place).

Dave - don't worry this doesn't sound arrogant at all, if anything it shows a great deal of objective thinking. You've presented what you perceive to be the facts without telling people what they should or shouldn't do i.e. you accept that people should make their own choices – if people made choices based on balanced research more often than the world would be a better place - ever thought about running for government - I'd vote for you.

I agree totally, I think drugs create a different reality, that if your comfortable with the world, you don't want or need. I rarely even drink as I want to experience the full reality of life and I feel drugs can actually limit this. But thats just my opinion

Yes pricklyleaf, I think in Australia certain types of mushrooms are classed under the poisons act. Not sure though, as rules change. I think linden was trying to point out that people might eat the wrong species and die.

bonzai, I’m surprised they are still legal, but it does seem strange to classify mushrooms with the highly addictive drugs like crack. I suspect that all politicians want to do is get re-elected without having to make difficult decisions. They seem to look for easy solutions to complex social problems and often use smoke screens to cover-up little things like election rigging.

Sprout, I often think the media have an irresponsible attitude to drugs. They are usually ill informed and tend to sensationalise everything to sell papers, ads or whatever, and they often inadvertently tell people where to buy drugs. I wonder what other circumstances were involved in causing that kid to go off his head. Banning is a best a temporary solution, as people tend to look for substitutes which are often more dangerous than the previous substance. A social worker friend tells me that in Australia glue and petrol sniffing, chroming and the misuse of other OTC products are now the biggest problems drugs for teenagers.

OWD I agree it is important to have having a very good understanding of the reasons people use drugs in the first place. We have discussed the social issues before, and drugs use to me would indicate social problems which are often more serious than a lack of something in their lives. I wonder how many in you “substantial minority of fairly messed up” people were abused. Though it’s probably a bit more complex than that.

Apparently we picked up our taste for alcohol, when as primitives, we discovered that fermenting fruit made us feel good. I often wonder if as a species we are pre-disposed to drug addiction? Traditionally, I think these urges were released at annual festivals, then it was back to reality for the rest of the year.

Humankind has had a long fascination with enthogens, and the use of enthogens like sacred mushrooms in shamanism, and other religious rituals. I think Tea Fairy made some excellent points regarding the power of sacred mushrooms in rehabilitation. The use of Ayahuacsa in the rehabilitation of alcoholics is also well documented.

If we as members of the human race practice meditation, we can transcend our fear, despair, and forgetfulness. Meditation is not an escape. It is the courage to look at reality with mindfulness and concentration. Thich Nhat Hanh
