before anyone starts moaning and groaning about the fact that this thread exists, let me explain..
i know there is a thread about the weight of staffs, and that ben (i think) mentions something about weight and contact, but i was wondering what ppl think about the ultimate size of the staff for contact.
i have a relatively short (1.30 M) and light (aluminium) and things like elbow, hand hand, elbow is possible, but i can imagine that a longer one is easier..
comments? suggestions? rude gestures?

Um, if i were to get serious about contact staff I would find a long 3/4" wooden "stick" and sleeve it into some silicon tubing. Then i'd probably drill a hole halfway through some large, cool looking bouncy balls, and glue them on the ends of the staff. Just an idea, never been tested.

and what about if i want a fire staff...
i guess i can light the tennisballs on fire
or another option would be attach some kevlar.. that seems to work too.. so ive heard
no but seriously folks, you said a long "stick", what do you mean by long?

in alot of the staff making/type threads you'll see posts from people that have been spinning a long time.
for myself, i've tried contact with all these staffs
all of these sticks had 2 foot of 4 inch wide wick on each end
1.5m inner core from concentrate. bought
1.5 meter wooden contact staff. bought
1m wooden staff (same type as above). bought
1.5m aluminium staff with 150mm wooden dowel in each end. made
1.5m stick same as above but with dowel all the way through. made
Two 1m ali staffs with 100mm dowel in each end. made
2m metal staff with soft grip from end to end and tennis balls instead of wicks. borrowed from some who made it. i love this stick
The two 1.5 meter sticks i made myself were both great for contact. Its harder with the lighter staff.
The 2m made contact alot easier for me. Its not a whole lot heavier in the ends like the wicked staffs but the weight and the length make easier to go slower for longer. this made it alot easier to see and feel what was happening. great learning tool but a bit long for me.
Weight and length give you momentum and planes. The less you have of each the more you have to work to get the results.
ben said in the How heavy is your staff thread that if you learn contact with a light stick you can do it with any stick. i reckon this is true.i learned to do an Elbow-hand-hand-Elbow roll with the inner core staff. i can do this with any staff now. this doesnt hold true in reverse for contact moves that im learning with my heavy 1.5m staff. which is my favorite staff (apart from my short doubles which i havent lit yet
)to paraphrase mcp who was quoting mo-seph (in the dead spinners society thread, i think) 'With a long staff planes come for free'
this is just my own experience. i've gone through every thread in the staff forum. every one of them. there is soooo much info hidden in there, including alot of experienced spinners preferences to do with stick (example, go back a few pages in the edinburgh thread in events. now did you expect to find a big ramble about staffs in there. nope. we were all off topic
)ultimatley i think you will only find the answers yourself through experimentation. make/buy a few different sticks and see how the learning curve feels.

man, i dont have time to go through each and every thread about staffs.. im a busy man, got places to go (park) people to see (HoPpers) things to do (spin)
but thanks for the advice.. ive got some contact down like the afformentioned elbow-hand-hand-elbow, and a not-very-long fishtail, but things like over neck and shoulders and back and arms and combinations of all of those are probly easier with a longer one..
next time i have 75 euros at my disposal im gonna go out and buy myself a long heavy staff..

i manage over the back and such like stuff with a one meter 20 staff, its pretty light as well, but im a short arse, its prob just a me-staff size type thing

i have a 5 foot staff and i find this perfect for any contact move i;ve tried so far......it also has a rubber grip on it....one that actually works so its alot easier to learn new contact moves

try a staff that is the same hight or just slightly shorter than yourself.
I mean 5 foot is longer for a 4'6" person than for a 7'2" , catch my drift?
and yes, heavy... mainly on the ends. don't buy it, make it. so it really fits your needs.
and talk to me, on the next dutch meet. (15th?). I love making things.

wooden broom hadle type stuff with a tennis ball on each end and a tennis rackett grip?
yes or no, or any quick and easy ways to make a pair of starves!

i dont know about starves.. i have no experience with them
now staves i know.. although im in the process of making my third one only.. id say as long as the wood isnt too heavy so that the effect of the tennisballs is reduced, then it should work..
but ask others as well cuz i have only got experience with metal staves and kevlar.. the whole jazz for fire..

yes, that will make a kickass contact stick. i suggest nailing the tennis balls on, with nails, so they don't fall off. Alternatively you could use glue. or something else.
tennis raquet grip is good, as is some bike handlebar grip tape, hockey grip, or even just loads of electrical tape.

Broom handles are a bit awkward for finger spins other than that there perfect. You can get 20-25mm dowels in hardware stores. Although if you can manage finger spins with broom handles they will be so easy on a thinner staff.

get some short sticks
do a buzzsaw cross using finger spins. tasty.
broom handles = handy
not so bendy as dowel. my dowel stick warped from over use
shower curtain rail = very handy and tennis balls + nails sounds like a great idea (might be bard to get into a curtain rail though

ive just used my tennis ball and wood staves and yes your right they kick ass!
ive learnt so much contact because my fire staff i just cant get to work yet! im only new to it so ive got to learn to adapt to different kit.
I'm going to leave the army and run away to the circus
