Hey all:

Have just recently joined the forums here, and dove right in posting a discussion topic, but thought maybe I should make a more formal introduction.

I'm going by blueboy because my favorite things to spin are these blue glow poi (yes yes blue balls i know i know... ubblol) and the name firemonkey was taken. (are you around? who are you firemonkey?) I like the blue glow poi because I always imagined that if I had superpowers of some kind, they would manifest as blue energy. And with that my geekdom has been revealed in its full glory! ubbloco

I live in San Francisco and work as a grants administrator for one of the City's municipal arts funding agencies. I've worked in the non-profit arts for most of my working life. I'm also a poet (some of my work can be read here:the imperfection of holy days ). But I'm taking a break from poetry because I've become completely obsessed with poi. All day I dream about poi: moves I'm working out, new moves I want to learn, poi I want to make etc. etc. You all know how it is. Anyway, it's interesting moving from an artform that is more mental and language-based to one that is based in the body and movement.

I've seen random people spinning in the parks here in S.F. and the first time I saw it with fire I was blown away. But my reaction then was "oh I could never do that" then came Burning Man...and watching the fire dancers the night of the burn made me want to be one of them next year, and so that's my goal now. It's what got me on this path anyway, but I know I'll keep spinning even if I never make it to the Playa again.

Out of curiosity: does everyone here spin fire? And I also wonder, for how many of you is poi the main thing and fire is just another object to spin, versus fire being what it's all about?

Looking forward to meeting and conversing with you all.

blueboy, i don't think the move you described has a name as such. it's one of the many many variations of the butterfly, and is generally referred to as the 'wiggle'

it can also be done from the reverse, or outwards butterfly

oh, and welcome

anyhow.

i juggled first and i think it made learning poi about a million times easier, mostly cause i'd already taught myself to be ambidextrous(well, nearly) so had no issues at all with making one hand do different things to the other and not really have to think about it.

and also it has made my throws more interesting, and my club juggling.

so the answer is; yes, but to begin with only because of something somewhat unrelated, and it is only after three years of spinning i am really getting the reward in terms of cross-pollination.

wiggle is a good name! funny, i can only do it from the reverse or underhand butterfly. from the forward or overhand butterfly i can get up into the mexican wave but then the whole wiggle part confounds me. i got the reverse butterfly in a snap but it took me a while longer to get overhand, so i expect this will be true of this move also. the opposite was true for the weave though, isn't that funny?

and bluecat, what you say about getting the ambidextrous part makes so much sense. i don't plan on learning to juggle though (love watching it however). i do want to add staff to my repertoire eventually.

hey strugz: i'm using your photo titled "Strugz Wire & Castle" as my desktop pic on my computer at work. (it replaces bjork) it's really a beautiful shot. now when i'm at the office i have a reminder of what i'll be doing when i leave. only not the wire part. or the castle.

i know it's early, or maybe it's late for you all but cheers! beerchug

after a couple of hours last night, i finally got the underhand ttn! *giggles* followed by raucous laughter. will be working on tightening that up and i really want to try getting the butterfly weave down next. i understand in my head how it's supposed to go, but making my body do it is a different matter entirely.

for those of you who celebrate it, happy thanksgiving!!

back after some time away actually, you know, working. wink

i think the butterfly weave is beyond me at the moment. the whole split time part is really messing me up. did the buzzsaw with fire for the first time while spinning for friends over the thanksgiving holiday. it's an easy move but so thrilling to do and a real crowd-pleaser. just need to work on getting into and out of it more gracefully. i've been all about transitions lately. interesting how you can do the same set of moves, but smoother transitions makes it all look better & more complex. was that an obvious point to the more experienced spinners out there? hope i'm not being remedial.

finally posted a few pics so check out my gallery! none of me spinning though -- am working on getting some. my friend dave took some great ones at our last spin, but he kept his camera in his pocket when he tried out his monkey fists and smashed it with a fireball. frown

For what it's worth, someone learned something from this (other than dave, whom I assume got a big lesson). I was spinning on Wed. (only my third light-up ever, so I'm clueless) and after taking a few pics, slipped my camera into my pocket. Remembered this thread and immediately removed it. Sorry about what happened - that really sucks, but thanks for the tip! smile

Hi ya GB, hi Andrea. Birthday was a nice subdued affair this year. Once you're past 30 though, I sort of feel that only birthdays ending in 5 and 0 are worth celebrating.

hug kiss to you both! (and to Katya too!)

And Andrea I was told that ubercanada is happening in May? I am hoping that you will be around as I'm planning on heading up for that.

Pffffft Rubbish! I'm past 30 and I think celebrating birthdays is fun, especially if when you reach 30 you start to celebrate backwards. By that I mean that with each extra year you celebrate more like you would the year before until you work your way back to the falling asleep head first into your cake years. ubblol
