Hi Spinners! I’m feeling rather shy
about this business of introducing myself as I’m so very ‘green’. I got into poi about a week ago, made my own from a couple of tennis balls the dogs rejected and a pair of nylon knee highs that belonged to my late lamented Mum. I’m working through the online lessons (grateful thanks to HoP staff for these, since at present I don’t know any spinners in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne). Although I’m just getting started, poi is becoming a family affair. I was introduced to it by my son, Mags the Jedi. My eldest grandchild (his daughter Isabelle) can do butterflies and she’s only five years old! Needless to say, I can’t – yet. I’ve got really hooked on reading others’ threads, now I’ve got to come out of the woodwork and introduce myself, so here I am. Or as my customised car number plate says “YER I BE”. I was born in Devon and that’s how we say “here I am” in West Country talk. BTW, I really, really miss West Country cider!

Hiya Rosie!!
Mags speak with a very neutral accent to, with only the occasional cornish sounding wurd coming through. Unlike me, I can't hear it but aparently I speak like a yam yam from the midlands. Which makes sense as wolverhampton is only 15 miles away and Birmingham is about 35 miles away.
Glad you liked my geordie accent, my girlfriends mom is a geordie so I hear it quite a lot.

I used to be called Pink Poi... because i had a set of pink poi. I dropped the "poi" part and replaced it with ...?
I live in Redhill so the other side from Farnham and such. But i want to move to the coast.

Good to hear from you... no, I'm not that good at all!!! I've been playing with poi for about 2 years, so I know some things, but I've seen really good people - and I've a long way to go yet
As you know, it takes a while for things to get to Northern Ireland and there aren't many people doing fire here, which is, I suppose, why it's easier to get busking work here.
I'm guessing from your posts that you do some kind of radio or television work?! Is that what you were doing here in the north? I'm a sub-editor in the Irish News, but I know a few of the broadcast media types
I have some friends in Lisburn, but don't know the town that well. I'm from Bangor, in fact, but come up to Belfast to work.
Well done on the butterfly, it can be a difficult one to learn (especially for guys... they have a tendency to hit themselves right where it hurts
). Keep practising and before you know it you'll be doing all sorts of funky moves... Are you planning to have a go with fire?!! Keep doing lots of practise first, but once you spin poi on fire you'll know all those bumps and bruises were worth it
Anyways, I'm in work now, so I'd better go...

Does your house really have chicken's legs! You see, I know my fairy tales. I really admire your posts, you write such good English, even though you said it was difficult for you. I haven't been to Berlin, but my parents lived in Dortmund for two years and I spent school holidays there. I have a good Germany accent, but - schade - I don't have a good vocabulary. I also learned German in Austria, because we lived in Northern Italy and had holidays in Austria, so some of what German I know is not the real thing. Have you seen a TV show from Vienna called Kommissar Rex (Inspector Rex), about a police dog? I can almost understand it without subtitles! Do you swing the fire? I'm posting this as to Firepoise, but really it's Hi to all of you who replied most recently. It's so good to 'talk' to you all and to get your encouragement. Particularly as I'm a bit of a grass widow for the next five weeks as my other half had to return to England as his mother is dangerously ill. I have to walk the dogs by myself and they can't understand why I'm swinging their tennis balls over my head in the park instead of throwing them.
Firepoise, I've been many things in life, just now I'm the manager of a college campus library; but I've been a secretary/PA in several countries, ran a nursery school in Africa, run my own hotel in England, a mature student for four years at Brighton Uni, a computer systems analyst, computer online helpdesk person, and now a librarian. The broadcasting was always 'on the side', from Aden in the Yemen, to Ceylon (Radio Ceylon's fillm critic no less), Kenya, Botswana and Melbourne. It kinda just happened, because I'll try anything once, but I loved it. Might do it again some time. Now I learn poi. Oh, yes, I also proof read an online website called Warrior Librarian, which takes a sardonic look at library life worldwide. www.warriorlibrarian.com - it is the sole creation of one Amanda Credaro - an amazing lady from Sydney.
Thank you to those of you who have sent me alternative poi sites, I'm looking at all of them and will be practising like mad. I'll post my progress. You know, some of the best Tv in Australia comes from UK and last night I was watching one of the John Nettles "Midsomer Murders" called "The Fisher King". In it there is a midsummer festival, and in the procession were jugglers and just as I was thinking, well where are the poi swingers, there they were in the background! When the scene turned to night, they were fire pois. I was naively excited, I felt quite a sense of 'ownership'. Now that I've tried it myself, I could appreciate the skill required. Right, back to practising, Rosie. Night all, have a great weekend.
PS: haven't heard from Mags lately, either online or privately. Anyone seen/heard from him? Not that I'm checking...... Here's to you all.

Wow, you're well-travelled! You must have some fantastic stories What was the nursery in Africa like? And how was Botswana?!
It's great to be a poi'er - fire dancing seems to unite people from around the world in a fairly unique way, and it's good to be a part of that.
Anyways, I'm going to go now... was playing with fire last night with my lovely friend Aidan from Cork, and after the show got a little too drunk (the alcohol had nothing to do with me burning half my eyelashes off either!!!). Now I'm sitting in work feeling horrible. Bleurgh. The evils of alcohol

Dont let firepoise fool you, she's amazing. Amazing enough that i let her put her arms around me while doing a butterfly - on fire. Hitting herself in the eye with a fireball was the first mistake i've ever seen her make.

Hey Rosie! Partly my fauly you've not heard from Mags for a while! He was all set on his way back to Falmouth, when Beth and I stopped by in Launceston, kidnapped him, and took him back Eastwards to go spinning in London for the weekend! Apparently he enjoyed himself too!

Well, it's been "yer I bain't" for a couple of weeks. I've been working my little butt off organising my first stocktake in the library. Fortunately, it went off ok but now it's rather like a come-down. Not that there isn't loads to do all the time, but the excitement is over. Term started again today. Libraries would be lovely places without users, all the books in the right places, nice and tidy. Heh, heh,, chuckles the Evil Librarian. Actually I'm more of a Warrior Librarian (see www.warriorlibrarian.com) and rather like my users who are all students. Not so sure about the teachers..... Also I'm a bit down 'cos my other half is in UK while I'm here in Oz and he can't come back for a while due to a very ill mum. The dogs are nagging me, where's Dad, have you divorced him and What Are We Going To Do Without Him?
I've found a thread for Melbournites and a new meeting place has been decided upon which is nearer for me and on Sunday nights instead of midweek. If I can get up the courage, I'll go. I'm SUCH a newbie, and boy does it show. I wish I actually knew someone who goes or had someone to go with. I'll have to ask around and see if anyone I know will come.
If anyone reads my meanderings, Hi there, hope you are all well. The weather is slowly perking up here down under. Summer (and Christmas) will soon be here.

Hey guys
Thank you for the birthday wishes! I've only just taken breath since we moved my library from one building to another on campus and the PCs at work weren't (working that is). I had a good day on The Day, thank you all. Thanks, Mags, I really thought you'd forgotten. Your sister did, but rang on the day just in time. My brother lived up to expectations and forgot!
Myco, I have been to Sunday meets at Alexandra Gardens but not for a while. I know Pineapple Pete and Ataxia and some others, but unfortunately pulled muscles in my right shoulder and can't spin much. I must try and come down soon, though, and see who else is there and watch the pretty lights. I'll be the oldest person there, you have been warned! I usually keep an eye on the relevant thread so I know what's been going down.
Clare, lovely to hear from you. I was watching a most interesting programme on Belfast the other evening, and thought of you. Pictured you spinning outside the Europa Hotel, have you ever done that? It looks a good venue, unless it's too posh and you'd be moved on? I hope you had a good weekend.

My son, who introduced me to HoP is very envious that I've seen you in action down at Alexandra Gardens, [he's in the UK but your reputation has reached him]. Haven't been twirling in AG for ages. Been v. busy, too much work, not good for the practising. Have you been there lately? I keep track of what is happening there even when I can't go.
