Posted: I've been playing with practice poi for a while and I want to start fire. So, in looking for a fire set, I have come across a lot of talk about different fuels. I'm a bit confused. What exactly do I need to get if I want to start fire? What is all this fuel business? How should I store things? Ah! a bit much. If someone could come and lift the fog from my mind, (or give me a good kick in the posterior for not finding the answer somewhere on the site) it would be much appreciated. Merci, et Au Revoir. Y.T.
Posted: You just need to buy a fire poi set. My first set was the single 4 inch Innercore set from the HoP shop.
I used White Gas because I heard the most about it and we had some lying around.
When I was done with my first burn, after running around and jumping up and down basicly acting like a total idiot... I stored them calmly in the shed. Or maybe in any well ventalated area out of the way of nature.
Posted: So, I'm getting this image of a bucket containing whatever fuel I can get my hands on, dunking the poi in it overnight then lighting up, slipping into hysterics, spinning and putting them out by smothering them with something, wrapping the poi in a nice little bag and calling it a day. (maybe, lidding the bucket before I light the poi) Tap me if I'm wrong - or swimming in logical fallacy. Thanks

Posted: spot on man...except the hysterics last a day or two. I shook for hours afterwards, myself.
Posted: Put your fuel in any empty paint bucket you can find. I think if you goto Lowe's or any hardware store and ask to buy an empty paint can they'll show you. Just be prepaired to go with $10. (I hope you'll get change back.)

Posted: Kinudin, might I suggest we clean out the paint bucket first, so there aren't any nasty stinky solvents and extra chemicals in bucket before we pour the fuel in.
IhavaDUCKonMEhead - In addition to everything else, it's absolutely essential for you to have a SAFETY, that is, a person with some safety equipment, including a fire extinguisher suitable for chemical fires, and preferably a fire blanket.
There's likely to be a lot of people who will say this isn't necesary as THEY didn't have problems on their first burn (including me).
But try telling that to the 22 year-old girl I met last year who has had five operations on her hands and forearms after a thread of kevlar got caught on a screw and wrapped both poi around her wrists like wire.
There was no way to predict that that would have happened but if she had a safety watching her, instead of burning alone, then she wouldn't have had the things on her wrists for over 10 minutes!
Her skin looks like silly putty, and she can barely write, let alone spin...
I strongly urge never to do fire without the right equipment and a safety looking after you, it's like skydiving without a secondary chute, the chances are almost nil that anything will go wrong, but if it does, it will be horrific and well worth the short amount of organising for that eventuality. Take care...

Apart from that, the logical series of events mentioned above is correct, I didnt skake much the first time, but when I actually started doing some more tricky moves with 'em lit....BOY OH BOY!!!
