here's the deal... my brother is a film student and we have already made one movie which was mixed with the prodigy's Voodoo people. after seeing the COL collections we believe we could do better!!.. this is not an insult to the creators but having the tech know how improves things no end. what we were thinkin is having poi being spun in/on/around famouse places in london, or even round the UK, and filming/editing it properly. however we also want others to join and make it a true effort. if this sounds good then get in touch and give me suggestions!!!

Howsabout outside some of the big catherdals at night when they get lit up?

There is a slight possibility that I am not actually right all of the time.

Bovrilmonkey and Dom have really big cathedrals that light up at night (sorry)

spinning on Millenium Bridge with the Tate Modern in the background would be nice.

and spinning in tube stations or even on a tube.(although LU are very touchy about people filming without permission)

If you want spinners then i recommend going down to Spittalfields Market on a tuesday night. There you will find plenty of innocent young jedi to lure into the cruel world of the moving pictures.

So, I recently climbed to the crossbar between two of the towers on Hammersmith Bridge, and spun up there above the reckless traffic. It probably wasn't a good idea in retrospect, and there are railings which make it awkward and annoying, but you can count me in for anything similar and a bit better thought out. What about the empty plinth at one corner of Trafalgar Square? I was eyeing that up speculatively last night. With Nelson's Column looming in the background...

Man, so many places. There's the old ones (Stonehenge); the wild ones (the moors -that would look cool!); the high ones (how about the top of Snowdon?); the urban ones (if we could break into Bluewater and spin there at night) and the weird ones (mate, how about Alton Towers after darkness, when everyone's gone home and the rides are all dark and idle...)

Oh, and here's a thought: good old Dubya sets foot on British soil in a couple of weeks. I'm well up for trying to get footage of spinning set against the protests that will kick off when he arrives. There'll be a small prize for anyone who manages to get a shot with Dubya in. Or a shot AT Dubya, for that matter... no, joking. Really I'm a pacifist. But...

My take on these ideas:
Ask yourself why you want to make a video and who'd want to watch it and why.
Have you ever seen things like the Pea Pot juggling videos? Compare these to COL. COL shows some great fire spinning and gives a great impression of the global fire scene, but you'll notice that the peapot videos have a consistently very high technical level. There's only a few people appearing in them, and whilst location is used well, along with humor, it's always based around an original or impressive trick. Whereas spinning the weave really fast outside the Tate wouldn't be worth watching.

So, whilst your video may have some great scenery make sure it's actually got content too. There's a lot of spinners in the UK, and passing through, who are some of the top technical spinners out there (unfortunately for the best dancers you'll have to get a plane ticket). It's these spinners that you'll have to convince to appear on video, but it'd be worth it if you really want to do something worthwhile and marketable.

I've seen other ideas - videos, gatherings, etc... posted on HoP or talked about. Mostly they were somebody's bright idea one day, posted talked about, everyone got excited, then they faded into nothing. How ca you assure people that this isn't going to fade away? You going to have filming schedules, deadlines, ideas? Your performers should have routines worked out before they go to film - and separate routines have to all work together as they're all parts of a whole. Remember this is performing, not just spinning. This may seem a bit extreme for a spinning video, but I think produce something worthwhile it's needed.

I know this may sound elitist, but I'd like to see a really excellent quality spinning video out there.

possibly. I did get in a sneaky photo of drew trying to play with your nipples that day, but i think that's a different genre of film altogether

Hi Henry - you were saying the videos that were to be played in bars? While non spinners may go - oooh, ribbons, fire etc they would soon get bored as Dom said watching the weave spun really fast in a pretty place.

I adore snowboarding videos, but truly I would only be interested in watching my friends or I board for the laugh and giggles. My boarding skills more likely to end up on 'you've been framed' than be shown in a bar.

Similarily, it would be nice to focus on some excellent technical spinners, spinning and dance, and you could have one big 'whoa scene, where you gather as many spinners as possible to do one big burn together for the fire 'wow' factor.
In with that some interviews with spinners that you profile might be nice. And some kick ass soundtrack to finish it off.

Good luck with it - if you decide on a big group fire burn I'd love to join the masses!

Come faeries, take me out of this dull world, for I would ride with you upon the wind and dance upon the mountains like a flame.

I agree, to some extent, with the argument that the spinning shown should be top-class, with more emphasis on that than on the location. However a lot of the technical stuff can be hard to recognise, particularly at night & done with fire, for people who are new to poi. There is surely room for 'shorts' based more on cool locations and strange toys than on the advanced quality of the spinning involved.

I agree that if the video is mainly to be aimed at spinners, then quality and originality of tricks would be the most important things. In this case, however, surely filming during the day would make more sense, so that viewers can pick up better on the tricks?

just to stick my oar in...
wouldn't it be good if someone did a tour of all the cities in the Uk where people spin and make a video out of it? may give an interesting insight into a developing interest group... or it may just look bollox. might be more interesting than a pure technical vid tho...
who knows? who has the money, time or bottle to do it? Henry?
