Poi Hurts!!

yeah, sometimes the injuries work out for bragging purposes... in my case however thats pretty rare. I'll never forget my first actual injury with Poi.

When I first picked up fire poi (was a glowstringer more or less before) I loved it. Couldn't get enough of it, often did things that were just out of my reach due to the adrenaline of the fire. There was an event here called CarnEvil (halloween deal) that all my friends were part of. I went there to spin and borrowed my friends long chain monkey fist. Everything was going fine, didn't care for the extra length but I made it work. I did a bth butterfly and like a moron looked up, and just as I did the poi hit each other and it was flaming monkey fist directly in the eye. Didn't burn anything, just put em out and walked off. About 10 minutes later a friend turns to me and goes "OH MY GOD! What happened to your EYE!?!?!?! Unknown to me the bruise I thought I had on my eye socket was slowly swelling into a giant knot, a min later I could see it with the damaged eye. Was totally gross.

Swelling went down by morning thanks to some ice. It didn't get a lot of attention thanks to the whole halloween party and everyone thinking i just had REALLY good makeup lol. The really messed up part is 3 days later I had a job interview and had to explain to them how I got the black eye... that was hilarious. Got the job though lol.

A job interview with a black eye from poi? AWESOME. I burned my eyelashes off once, but nothing nearly so brutal.

thats a great story!! hey i finaly got my first staff injury, i was doing the windmill quite fast and i hit my achillies tendon and i cut my heel with the metal end of the staff! still i think poi hurts more with the ball hitting and black eye creating, glasses smashing, eyebrow splitting, knee cap popping, face bleeding, boob burning, upper arm scarring and eyebrow burning - but hey its all a part of the fun!!

I generaly mange to avoid black eyes but my nose usually cops that one as punishment for being too cocky.

My ears seem to get hit a lot.. it could be a lot worse, but a good firm shot to the ear can really hurt momentarily.. like a stubbed toe on the side of your head.

The least amusing pain is when you hit your funny bone (everybody else will find it hilarious tho)

I've not really had any really good ones since just after I started, when I managed to very nearly knock myself out with the poi of death (TM) a staffer friend made for his girlfriend with solid steel cores, doing an overhead butterfly, w. collision. They were unlit

I also set my hat on fire, not long after.. which was mainly funny due to the girl who had been teaching me's reaction.. she very politely tapped me on the shoulder, and said 'Um, excuse me, but do you know your hat's on fire?' before putting it out for me

Well it's better than some stranger shouting "your on fire" and thinking that they are being a smart arse.

Hitting myself in any new piercing is agony... i've really not had any that have been too bad. When i first started i had bruises all over. Whenever anyone asked i told them that my other half had been beating me. Scarily no-one beleived me and i had to tell the truth....:)

I seem to have avoided all this....

Well, got one burn on my back, but I have no idea how that happened. I mean, I know my shirt caught fire, but exactly why I have no idea. It was close fitting and all I did was a hip-reel.

I thought that as I got more experienced with poi I would hit myself less. How wrong I was. Got a good whack to the thigh today which is still tender. A few months ago was even better. I fully busted the myth that getting hit in the box doesn't hurt the womenfolk. How wrong I was. I had to take a time out for a good five minutes after that venture.

But it's true. If you're not hitting yourself, you're not doing enough new moves. I'm up to around 14 right now. I want to get to the point whereby I can do a 360 BTB by the end of the summer.

Oh goodness, I've set my bandana on fire a couple of times(i was drunk), I hit myself in the head hard enough to cut my forehead a couple of weeks ago. I also have torn my ACL in my left knee( resulting in surgery) I was in the middle of a backbend while spinning and lost my balance and bent funny to keep from setting myself on fire!

I've been hit by them but it doesn't hurt if you get to dominate the move.

Compared to glowsticks, Poi really don't hurt nearly as much. Though when glowsticks I have this unique ability to guide them straight into my temples. Almost knocked myself out once doing it. Might of actually succeed it was dark outside. All I know is I hit the ground.

Poi Just like going for the back of my head. :P

i managed to bust my lip and give myself a black eye with glow sticks..... the day before having to go for a family meal and explaining exactly why i looked like i'd been fighting!

Doing BTB stuff can be dangerous seeing as it's behind you so you can't see the nut shot coming.

I had to explain to my SO how exactly I came to have two identical bruises, one top of each ass cheek. I was just starting poi at the time, so my explanation of "overhead butterfly" didn't mean squat to him... *g* It was funny though and it taught me a lesson: start with CIRCLES *bg*

I had my ear pierced industrially and hit myself square on the piercing site (mind you it was infected to begin with) and had to run inside the house just to scream haha. Damn that hurt. I've also busted out 4 lightbulbs in my bedroom...now we have none left so we use the lamp LOL.

I can vouch for the hitting between the legs thing: have done it several times now and am SO glad I am not a guy.

I've only been doing this a week but already have a HUGE bruise on the right side of my leg I continue to hit. At this point it's either getting callused or I'm hitting it less as it doesn't hurt as much. I've bonked myself several times in the eye with ogg and sock poi, hit myself in the temple more times than I can count trying to learn high reels (I foresee many more temple shots because I just can't seem to get that move) - while changing clothes a few days ago I was amazed by how many bruises I have on my legs that had to have come from the poi.

So yeah. Pain is the way of the game, it seems.
