not that I want to worry you or spoil partying with your HoP friends or anything, just concerned, but are you sure they're liberal enough that nothing on this site you've ever posted might jeopardize your position if they identify you? (it was posting their mail that worried me most, but just the story is identifiable)
lots of blogger lost jobs n' stuff these days. And anything posted on this site will have a MUCH higher search ranking than any random blog.

Nx? Herr Professor Doktor Lightning. Please. As for Australia, now that it seems that I'm getting time off, I may delay my trip to Australia and instead opt to do a rotation in Madrid so that I can perfect my medical Spanish. I'd then do Oztrellia once I was done with residency and could just play, rather than having to work there, too.

I had another one of those days where I was walking around and having random paroxysms of joy at the idea that I'm moving back to San Francisco. I was listening to Evanescence's "Bring Me to Life." The lyrics reflected my feelings. In my time away from San Francisco, I've lost a lot of who and what I am. I don't have good connections to poi spinners, I've lost connections with my friends, and Burning Man has become the one time each year when I spirit gets recharged and I feel whole again. Six years and two months ago, I drove out of San Francisco. I had tears in my eyes as I left Stanford's campus and drove down 280 out of the Bay Area. And I found myself in Michigan, my birthplace, where I grew up, and a place I regard with deepest loathing. Never have I ever been so unhappy. I was probably clinically depressed the entire time I was in medical school. It got a bit better when I moved to New York, but New York always felt strange, foreign, alien. I'm not a New Yorker. I'm a San Franciscan.
The homesickness has been like a stomachache that never goes away. I tried not to think of San Francisco, I tried not to look at photos of anything west of the Rockies, and I *definately* didn't visit. I knew that I wouldn't be able to handle the pain of having to leave it once again.
Until I posted this thread.
I fly out to visit over Columbus Day Weekend next month. It doesn't hurt anymore. I'm going to check out apartments. I'm going to swim with Stanford Masters. I'm going to explore. I'm going to hang with my friends. I'm going to drink it all in without fear of being overwhelmed with grief.
I don't mean to imply that San Francisco is perfect. It's got its share of issues, of course.
But it's my home, and it's where I want to be more than anywhere else in the world.
