Clubs do not translate well for me since I use finger loops and rely heavily on finger movements for control. They also use a fair bit of finger control to keep them spinning where you want them - I'd argue that they use more finger control than poi. I reckon it's probably because you (like the majority of people I've seen pick up clubs after spinning poi) are used to the string being there - it acts as a flexible joint so that your hands can get away with making movements that'd send something rigid like a club into odd patterns.
