Hm, I just read through this whole thread and one thing i noticed is that no-one seems to have mentioned this (and i would say this goes for poi too).
Staffs move in pre-determined motions, whose rules are laid down by the laws of physics. The flow that people always talk about is just that, moving with the motion that inertia and momentum define. Therefore, my philosophy of staff (and i've only been doing this for 6 months, so I'm JUST starting rolls) is simply this: Its my way of playing with the universe, more complicated rolls are more complicated ways of doing it. Just another example of the huge playground thats been provided for us humans.
In all honesty though, I feel the same way about music and longboarding, so as a definitive staff philosophy this might not work for everyone.

As we know, There are known knowns. There are moves we know we know. We also know There are known unknowns. That is to say We know there are some moves We do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, The moves we don't know We don't know. So get moving.

…Ignore ‘Phenomenological’ …it smells funny.
Funny that, it's the one one which I think actually applies. Staff - interaction. It's your relationship to the world, and how you experience and interact with it that staff can teach you about. Sometimes you can move obstacles, sometimes you just have to get your timing right. Sometimes there's something about you in the way of progress, and sometimes there just is no progress to be had in a certain area. Different objects (different staffs) can produce different effects - the short staff is phenomenologically closer to some moves than long staffs, and vice versa. Different staffers - how you relate to the Other. Not encroaching on someone else's space, and giving people the props they deserve. Other people not respecting these rules can get you bonked just as good as if you don't respect the process of acquiring knowledge, such as trying to do something before you're ready (also known as learn it THEN burn it). I can see direct relations to Husserl, Heidegger, Levinas and Sartre there.
My philosophy: Let the staff takes you where it takes you, and let it show you what it shows you but heed the first lesson: don't let it hit you in the face/nuts. Because that's not a cool thing to do.
Hmm. Good thread. I like Chumpy's "woman-based" comments. Particularly that when you first meet a woman, you have to keep her at arms length because 'she could be dangerous' Also i8beefy2's reference to 'the bad place'..
*wanders off to attempt to make Staff his 'biatch forever'*

Staff Retention Philosphies.
1. Treat your staff with respect at all times. 2. Remember, they are all individuals and deserve individual recognition 3. Do not force them to do what you want to do, tell them where you want to go and let them lead the way. 4. And the key to staff retention...don't let go! :-)
