West Australia has a smallish group of spinners that meet twice a week at two different spots with an almost monthly bigger meet depending on when Byron motivates us.
I gather the East coast is much bigger though.

Nucleopoi: I haven't played Badminton for a long time....I sort of had no one to play with in NSW cause no one knew what it was. So for the six years I was there I didn't do it and haven't taken it back up.

I would love to get back into it but I am guessing I wouldn't be as good as I used to be.

Poi, Skating and horse riding are my three main interests....

If you were a real hobbit those big feet would have hair.

Try eating lots of wasabi I have been told it clears the sinuses and makes you grow hair on your chest...then you can shave that off and super glue it to your feet.

ok, chemical industry in australia? pretty much everywhere.

it really depends on what industry your after - petrochemical? mining? pharmaceutical? food? chemicals? water? energy? environmental? nuclear?
do you really have a preference, and do you have any previous experience?

it also depends how far out from the major centre you wish to be. for instance there is a polyethylene plant 6km from the heart of sydney, and there are mining facilities 600km away from the next community.

a good resource for general information on the different industries available is at www.chemlink.com.au

if students have gone to exchange to australia before, maybe someone in your department at uni can help you with how previous students went?

im a chemical engineer working in the process control and instrumentation, and have a reasonable good idea on whats around, but it depends on what your after.

petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, chemicals are my thing(inorganic and organic).
nobody else has been to australia from my uni thats my problem.have experience to the extent of lab experiments at a-level and uni.my year in industry is to get that experience.
i would preper places close to some sort of civilisation.6km from sydney sounds nice.
where do you work? which company?
do you have a GlaxoSmithKline out there?

What about last year wasn't there a flood then?

I know one of my friends went there last year and she was having lots of trouble with too much rain and some of the roads being totally washed out.

Rain? I haven't seen real rain in a long time. Every now and then it drizzles...does that count?

No not really .

The only reason we some areas a little flooded is that there's poor drainage .

Hi Perth spinners,

I'm heading your way on Saturday with my girlfriend - Perth (or 'Pwerf" as she jokingly calls it) is her home town. Just there for a holiday but I'll attempt to make it along to one of the fire spinning meets as per listed in the "Meet Others" database. Would be quite good for me 'cause I have no one to spin with in my part of the world, I'm getting very, very stagnated. Not sure how I'll handle the heat though, anyone who has been to Southland in NZ will know just how different it is here. See ya next week (hopefully)

[Wanders off to try and purchase SPF 100+ sunblock...]

Hi, me again.

I've made it to Perth, the beaches are awesome, warmer than my average bath! Sorry I didn't make it to the spin last night, was enjoying some fine WA Shiraz instead (couldn't drive or spin). Not sure if I can make it tonight, I'll see what my girlfriend's plans are (I have to rely on her navigational skills, I get lost trying to walk around the block). Great place, I'm sure my opinion will change if I get bitten by something though (my girlfriend keeps taunting me with stories of tiger snakes and Ross River virus - just to keep me on edge). Hope to catch up tonight, off to Albany tomorrow for some botanising.

Cheers

Don't worry about those tiger snakes they are very hard to come by...I have been here six years and not seen one except in the zoo.

There is a big spin Wed night on the foreshore at South Perth from 7.30pm

If you stay in Albany you should be safe from RRV and its friendly cousin Barmah Forrest Virus (I kid you not).

Instead of adding a new thread (and getting told to do a durbs ) I thought I'd post in here! I'm coming to the land of Oz at the end of March. Will be going to Ben in Adelaide to begin with then we're going to go to as many places as we can afford. We were just after some ideas of places to go to and any cool events which will be happening from end of April onwards! We definately want to go to Perth, Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne, Sydney and hopefully Tas too but are keen to find out whats going on and when! I'm so excited about hopefully meeting people from here!! Hope I've posted this in the right place - sorry if I've not!!

If she hasn't got a suit of armour she can definitely fit you with some chain mail! hehehe

When you come to Perth try to organise it so you are here for a Monday and Tuesday cause they are our regular twirl nights....but if you can't make it on one of those days if you let us know when you will be coming we should be able to organise a fire twirling party either on the foreshore or at the old Midland Train Tunnel.

Gnor and I can talk it up and maybe organise it together if you wanna meet all us strange and unual Perth twirlers.

Hope to see you here soon!

Let us know when you're headed to Brisvegas, welcome to come stay and we'll have all the saftey equpment u need (for critters above or below) + info on what is going on eventwise. Smallish outdoor doofy things a bit out of town tend to be everyother week or so, if you guys are into that sort of Marlarky.

A canadian couple I know really did have a koala fall on thier tent. The girl screamed DROP BEAR! and the rest of their camp (also all from the States or Canada) scattered from the campsite as fast as thier legs could carry them. No thoughts of heroism...
The Koala rolled around a bit then made it's way off, but they now tell anyone back home that cares to listen about thier 'close brush' with a drop bear. A few people here thought to comfort them by pretending the whole drop bear thing is a 'myth' or 'just something Aussie backpackers get a kick out of telling the others' but these white lies were to no avail...

Instant ancient tradition. We are up to three delightful English and one German and one USA guests being taken up the tunnel at Midnight.
We dont have castles but this is almost as good!! There is the chance to see drop bears and hoopsnakes on the way.
We found a roo one night between us an d the tunnel, it was too dark to see it as it jumped past at high speed within touching distance. (if we hadnt been hiding behind each other)

I'm a Melbournite!
Have been wielding a single long staff for some time & i'm beginning to dabble in dual short staves. I also enjoy Yoga & provided I can get there this year I'll be teaching Yoga at Common Ground 2006. Yaay!

melbourne has a small but dedicated scene. brisbane's scene is huge. it's because firetwirling is suited to warmer weather and tourism. i should go up there, work the gold coast and the holiday resorts .. waste a coupla years .. should be fun

maybe, just maybe, i'll move

Brisbane's scene is huge.

Brissy's scene isn't as accessible as it used to be, or as apparently huge, since Moonfest. There's still quite a few good people around, just more dispersed.

Ah yes I see what you mean.

There is a fair bit of work up here at conferences and meet and greets and rewards events and stuff. Corporate tourism.

Hey everyone,

can't wait to meet other spinners and see the beautiful coast you've got over there. We'll be two happy campers and a gorgeous doggy doing the East Coast down alllll the way to Tassie. Yay, travelling again!!! It's about time, getting hot here in the Alice...

Might see you there.

Never run into it much here. But then we are not in a real 'gangy' part of the city. *calls on Pogo who lives Southside*.

There were a lot of drunk teenies a few years ago at the Burleigh meet but I hear that's pretty much sorted these days.

Nifelium:

The meets i've attended in Melbourne have been Southbank/Arts Center and Fitzroy areas. On the whole we haven't had any/many problems with gangs or teenagers or the like. We get the occasional crazy drunk tourist or tramps who have a penchant for causing trouble, but nothing that hasn't been diffused quickly

Sorry to hear about your local troubles!

tis the main reason I haven't tried to spin up at the local park; there's a very large open area park withing 50m of my front door and it'd be perfect for a local spin meet, or even just pulling out a stick or two occasionally and setting it on fire, but it'd just be begging for trouble. the area is filled with nutters, drunks and young'ns with nothing better to do than get into trouble.

as others have alluded to; pick your spot, and you're not likely to have too much trouble.

its not that im worried that much just alot of stupid crap has hapned to me in the city (like the time i saved some guys life after he got bashed and thrown into the yarra at southbank.)

around the burbs my area in articuler theres a few but im actually out there more with even more mates so they jsut stay away. i usally tend to spin reclusivly in a local storm drain actaully or under a local freeway bridge. no one comes by there and no body can see you.

but the city. i feel as though it hates me

Perth has trouble with being 'overtaken' by unsavourable types in winter.

But usually a few months of hibernation gets rid of them.

In my few forays into more populated areas while spinning people have tended to treat it with admiration and amazement rather than aggression!

The most aggressive situation I've run across was one in which I was demanded to do a show... which I was already doing anyway, so I just threw in some more visually impressive movements and that was pretty much it... I was told to keep it up and the drunkies moved on.
