rev - i get what you said about the stool. i was pointing out that the buzzsaw has an excellently defined negative space even though it is not bound absolutely (there is a gap of an inch or so between fingertips usually). [image]http://www.apogeephoto.com/mag1-3/stool3.jpg[/iamge] you are completely correct that the outside of the stool counts as negative space. i was pointing out that in that example, the frame of the photograph makes the negative space 'outside' the stool far more clearly defined. like you said, any space not filled by an object is regarded as negative space - all the space around a spinner is negative space. but it is the exagerration of these spaces, using objects and boundaries to create discrete negative spaces that makes them interesting. compare with what mo-seph mentions about the poi spinner and the stage... not sure what you're arguing against here dude but while we're on the subject - my wrists rarely touch apart from when i spin extra beats when weaving in the wallplane. they *never* touch during inverted weaves - especially the 1bt inversions like the '3bt weave that goes over-under-through' and the notcoleman5.

I definitely like the negative space "title". I think it is fitting and is nice to have a label for this concept finally.

point taken coleman.. I was just confused.. because you were like but no... and I was like but I dont understand.. now I do.. thx..
and on the inverted weave thing.. me and spiral had talked long ago about inverted weaves.. and he got me to do one with my wrists together.. to show that they don't have to be isolated, even in the slightest... and by inverting that way, you create a non-disjuncted negative space.. and so when I think inverted weaving.. thats what I think.. since when I think of keeping my wrists apart during an ivnerted weave, I create a slight isolation to make it work. and thus because I'm a geek, I call that an isolated inversion..
wasnt really arguing so much as clarifying that one can create negative space with inversions by just using the body to create space and the poi to go through it..
arashi- so when will we see this routine? sounds fun

I suppose you want me to post a video: theres gold in this here video Negative space and what I would call threading (orange top sequence near the end), but thats not any proper name.. theres lots of negative space stuff to play with with poi, and with staff and any prop and no props and there lots of threading to be done with poi and with a staff and some very nice stuff too hint: experiment with putting the iso point at the centre of the neg space and please do try not to look too camp when you put your hand on your hip ... hmm. going to ignore a lot of the inversion talks cause i would have to make an effort to understand them. to be honest most of the negative space effects i've been plaing with are created by the poi and me, not just me. so all this buzzsaw stuff is also not what i am going to talk about. *slaps arashi* just cause we didn't have a name for it doesn't mean we weren't doing it. but whenwhenwhenwhenwhen do we get a vid-yo? i'm with the others here.... right then nix. look back at my last post for some applications. but *dons beret* i em tryeeng to make ze understanding of ze concept bettair, tryeeng to mek all ze sings you 'ave bee doing fit into a fameely, so zey you can explore ze leemeets of ze fameely. put bluntly, just knowing this concept made me learn five new things yesterday: armbuzzsaw around the poi, both sides(will have to show, its wierd) an extension to the contorsionist foot grab i learnt in graz three variants o the throw you mentioned(which incidentally uses negative space twice, once where it passes between the legs, once in the gap) now f*ck off and work on it you lazy scot but it's the mindgame variations that leave me boggled. elasta where are you? love Rob

You're mind is writing checks your digital camera and bandwith can't cash. Wake me when the vid's uploaded.
how 'bout you just come to burning flipside next year and just see it with your own eyes?
hmm..., how about that mister "I'm so superior because I live in a blue state even though I've never made it out to burningman"

If I actually thought that there was a chance of hanging out with cool firespinners the whole time rather than dodging naked granola chicks on E, I'd think about it. I'll be in Scotland during Burningman if anybody needs me.

so let me see if im getting my head around this.
forgive the simplicity of my examples.
So, if you stand with one leg a foot forward and one leg a foot back and do a buzzsaw in between your legs. This is using a negative space to contain a pattern.... ?
Say i stand on one leg, lift the other and put the tip of my toe on my other knee. Now I put my staff through the eyehole created and do, say, a simple one beat pattern with no crossing over. One handed or two off center. Isolating the center of the staff in the space. This is using a negative space to constrain a pattern.... ?
glass, nice vid, got any more pieces of eight?
blue and all the rest. yowzaaaa, this is crazy cool stuff.
