Hello,

I'm planning to build an "eternal flame" for the Fire Conclave at Afrikaburn. The group has decided that it will essentially be a paraffin fueled lantern, in a decorative structure, with a big flame.

I've been looking at options for the wick. Obviously it can't be a normal lantern wick, because that's too small. I was thinking of either using a thick cotton rope, or possibly a 25mm thick kevlar rope.

Has anyone ever tried using kevlar wick for a lantern? One thing I'm wonde

did this when i was in school, step 5 is the most annoying and where most people screwed up on so you should probably get enough of the ingredients to make more than 1 attempt at it

also, its quite flammable so id recommend wearing gloves when handling it and taking them off when lighting the gel

Is Paraffin oil carcinogenic?

 Hi oxmot.

Believe or not, Paraffin is a name used all over the world for a range of different types of fuel, so be very very careful about making assumptions about any fuel.

First step is get the MSDS sheet (Medical Safety Datasheet) that must be provided when asked anytime any chemical is available for sale.

Once you've done that, the word 'tub', makes it sound like this is more of a waxy parrafin, like Vasoline, and not a liquid fuel at all...

Here are some of the pictures from the build and the final product. I am pretty happy with how everything turned out in the end. All thats left now is to see how it holds up. It might be a while (possibly month or two) before it gets tested but I will let you guys know.

Cool. I placed my order earlier, getting the one more my height as i thought that would probably be preferable. I can't wait to get my hands on it, but the last time i ordered from HomeofPoi, it took about a week to get the shipment to me. Not that i'm complaining or anything, they estimated around 2 weeks so i was very happy with that speed.

The key thing is to get a substance with three main characteristics.

1. Find the temperature your fuel burns at from its MSDS sheet and get a material that burns at a higher temperature.

2. Check that it will not be loosened or be broken down by your fuel and that it is absorbing enough to hold the fuel.

3. Ensure it is hardy and able to take knocks and abrasion for a long period of time before it becomes weakened and therefore dangerous.

Its a long list that very few materials can
