Hello there,

I'm doing a dissertation on dog behaviour and training and wondered if you'd be able to answer a few questions.

So far i've had 4 replies which is highly worrying, so any contribution is most welcome!

Thank you! grin

1) How many dogs do you have?
2) What are their names, ages, gender and breed?
3) Are they neutered?
4) Do you have any other pets?
5) What was the reason for getting your dog(s)
6) Do you have or are currently working towards any animal related qualification or training?
7) Are you working / volunteering within the animal sector?
8) Have you attended/are you attending any form of dog training? (please specify)
9) If 'yes' to q 8: Why did you choose this method?
10) What are your views on the training of Q8 or training in general?
11) Would you consider attending training in the future? Why?
12) Do you have a dog Door Flap?
13: Do you let your dog(s):
a. on your lap?
b. on your sofa/chair?
c. on your bed?
d. dig in the garden?
e. eat food from your plate?
14) What type of lead do you use?
15) Do you use any negative reinforcers (discs, correction spray, electric collar)?

1) How many dogs do you have?
One
2) What are their names, ages, gender and breed?
His name is skoll, 11 months, male, shelty, rotty, pitbull, lab mix
3) Are they neutered?
yes
4) Do you have any other pets?
no
5) What was the reason for getting your dog(s)
I have been around dogs all my life, I like dogs better then people, and I really wanted him because I knew his full lineage and their all awesome dogs (all my friends have most of the rest of his family, going back a few generations)
6) Do you have or are currently working towards any animal related qualification or training?
No but id like to get dog first aid, and get him certified as a therapy dog when he's older
7) Are you working / volunteering within the animal sector?
not currently
8) Have you attended/are you attending any form of dog training? no
9) If 'yes' to q 8: Why did you choose this method?
10) What are your views on the training of Q8 or training in general?
training of q8? what?.. on the second part of the question training is very important, partially because of safety (your dog must know to stay off the road, to halt, stay, be properly socialized with all kinds of people (adults, children, senior citizens..) and dogs, and dogs are also a lot happier if they are trained because they are working, which they love to do, some dogs more then others.
11) Would you consider attending training in the future? Why?
not really, ive never had a challenge training dogs I couldn't figure out, im familar with all the techniques, I don't think their is much I could learn.
12) Do you have a dog Door Flap?
no]
13: Do you let your dog(s):
a. on your lap?
he's 70 pounds and only 11 months, he doesn't really fit on my lap so no
b. on your sofa/chair?
yes
c. on your bed?
yes]
d. dig in the garden?
he's not allowed to dig unless he's someplace where it's alright.
e. eat food from your plate?
no, most human food is terrible for dogs, I keep him on a diet of grain free high quality kibble and raw meat
14) What type of lead do you use?
none unless im around places where it's risky or illegal to have him off leash, when I do I have a neat rope leash I found that has a noose like loop on one end, but it has 4 rings, two of which are interwined that lock it from tightening, it's really gentle on his neck much moreso then a collar and leash, when he's done growing im getting a custom fitted harness made for him.
15) Do you use any negative reinforcers (discs, correction spray, electric collar)?
no I think that stuff is for idiots who are to lazy/dumb to figure out how to train a dog without that crap, I tell people right off when I see them using that crap. I do use negative reinforcement, but it comes in the form of body language and if he's in dire trouble I role him on his back, which ive only had to do a couple of times when he did something seriously bad.
16) What would you do if your dog:
a. licked your face?
I let him do this all the time, but if i tell him "no kiss's he wont do it, and he's pretty good about doing it to strangers, not so good about doing it to friends, but will always restrain himself if you tell him not to before he's about to.
b. started jumping up at you?
he only jumps up when I tell him "up up" or I deliberatly get him really excited when im playing with him, if he did it otherwise I would tell him no and make him sit.
c. nudged their food bowl?
fill it up, I keep his food dish filled always, unless theirs other dogs around, I find if your dog doesn't gorge themselves it's the best way to feed them, because they regulate their own diet based on activity and don't overeat/undereat, some dogs will just overeat like crazy if you try this though
d. pulled on the lead during a walk?
tell him to slow down and he does, but it took a lot of work to get to this point.
e. disappears during a walk?
call him, he never goes to far
17) Does your dog exhibit any behaviour that is undesirable to you? If yes, what?
not really, atleast nothing that shouldn't be expected given his age.
18)Would you say your dog is:
a. aggressive? no
b. fearful? no
c. destructive?no
d. disobedient? no

You know, another question that would be useful is:
What do you do to ensure that your dog is not barking/whining/howling when your are out.

As a non dog owning 'neighbour' this is a crucial point that a lot of dog owners seem to skip....

2) Shelby, about 16 or so by now... female. Red heeler with the tiniest bit of kelpie in her.
3) Yes
4) No
5) Family pet/ play companion
6) No
7) No
8) No formal training.
9)
10) Training is a great idea and no dog should really be untrained in my opinion.
11) Never in my wildest dreams. I trained my dog myself and I think that in doing this she and I have developed a much deeper understanding of what one another wants as well as developing a deeper loyalty.
12) No. She knocks on the door if she wants in.
13: Do you let your dog(s):
a. If I'm sitting on the ground I'll let her put her head on my leg and I'll give her a scratch, but she doesn't really fit on my lap, I think I used to allow it when she was a pup, but I was about 6 then.
b. No.
c. No
d. There are a few spots that she's allowed to have a dig and she knows where they are.
e. No
14) When I take her on walks I use a reasonably standard leash that attaches to a chain collar (Not a choker chain). I rarely have to use it, though, it stays in my hand 90% of the time.
15) Not of that kind, I'll give her a sharp rap across the snout with my fingers but thats about it.
16) What would you do if your dog:
a. Firstly push her off and let her know with my body language and voice that I was displeased with her actions.
b. Same as above.
c. Depending on the time of day either feed her or simply tell her 'No'
d. I'd give a sharp command for her to heel if she were on her lead but usually she walks beside me anyway.
e. In the past I would have whistled, but these days I have to clap because she's going a little deaf.
17) I can't think of anything she's done in quite some time and the last few (of which I can't even remember what they were) were once off things.
18)Would you say your dog is:
a. No.
b. Not at all.
c. Not anymore, when she was a pup she could be, but thats normal.
d. Not so much, but I think she's taking a few liberties because she can't hear as well. I suspect she hears slightly more than she lets on. But I know theres a lot she doesn't hear... theres often nil response to the mention of treats.

2) What are their names, ages, gender and breed? Karma, 15, female, border collie
3) Are they neutered? Yes
4) Do you have any other pets? Yes - horses and a duck that rides on karma's back
5) What was the reason for getting your dog(s) I was a kid and wanted one for company, i guess... shitty town and didn't like any of the people.
6) Do you have or are currently working towards any animal related qualification or training? Nope
7) Are you working / volunteering within the animal sector? Nope, but have extensively in the past
8) Have you attended/are you attending any form of dog training? (please specify). Nope, but have in the past - group obedience
9) If 'yes' to q 8: Why did you choose this method? combined socialising with difference levels of challanges - liked the people who were running it - gentle but got results. Karma needed a challange... she is cleverer then me smile
10) What are your views on the training of Q8 or training in general? I think proper socialising can be more important then training... and group obediance did both... which was good... i think it can be open to bad trainers
11) Would you consider attending training in the future? Why? If i ever get another dog i will take her/him to a similar thing. Karma went later in life (she was already 10yrs) and we didn't benifit from the socialising as much as we could have if she was a pup. I want to be able to take my dog into any situation and trust she/he will react calmly and safely.
12) Do you have a dog Door Flap? No
13: Do you let your dog(s):
a. on your lap? No
b. on your sofa/chair? Yep... now she is grey
c. on your bed? only if i watch a scary movie
d. dig in the garden? Yep... now she is grey... previously, nope.
e. eat food from your plate? Nope
14) What type of lead do you use? A check chain and cotton rope with a dog-clip
15) Do you use any negative reinforcers (discs, correction spray, electric collar)? Nope... just a 'stern tone'?
16) What would you do if your dog:
a. licked your face? physically move her away and say 'no'
b. started jumping up at you? as above
c. nudged their food bowl? feed them... thats cool.
d. pulled on the lead during a walk? heel and check them beside you
e. disappears during a walk? um... call the fbi?
17) Does your dog exhibit any behaviour that is undesirable to you? If yes, what? oh now she is old she is a nightmare... she has gone all bloody crazy-dog and doesn't like new furniture (ie distroyed my new computer by climbing onto the desk, pushing the monitor off the desk and digging into the key-board so that all the keys were scattered around the room. Crazy-dog). She jumps out the windows even though she has trouble walking. She crazy.
When she was younger she had issues with listening to other people but was good with me... did amazing cirucs tricks and stuff.
18)Would you say your dog is:
a. aggressive? towards other dogs she can be
b. fearful? no... although now she is deaf and blind she can be... she was attacked by a couple of german shepards last month and hasn't wanted to go back down their road
c. destructive? see above (bye bye computer!)
d. disobedient? she can't hear of see... so i don't bother with 'commands'. In the past she was with other people... if she thought she could get away with it.

... simplify ...

d. disobedient? nope

10) What are your views on the training of Q8 or training in general? I think training is very important but that doesn't mean you have to spend money on it.
11) Would you consider attending training in the future? Why? I don't think so, I've got it.
12) Do you have a dog Door Flap? No, that's one thing that she's annoying about.
13: Do you let your dog(s):

3) Are they neutered? No.
4) Do you have any other pets? No.
5) What was the reason for getting your dog(s) I had Hamsters before but I really wanted a Jack Russel since I was little so we got one finally. Originally looking for a puppy, we saw her there at 4 months and suspected mistreatment. I had to have her and only her.
6) Do you have or are currently working towards any animal related qualification or training? No, but you should see some of the stuff I've trained her to do.
7) Are you working / volunteering within the animal sector? I've done this and it went really well. I really enjoyed my time with the RSPCA. This has had to end though due to school.
8) Have you attended/are you attending any form of dog training? (please specify)No.
9) If 'yes' to q 8: Why did you choose this method? N/A
10) What are your views on the training of Q8 or training in general? It's very important and if anyone finds it difficult on their own then they should try going to a proffessional school of some kind.
11) Would you consider attending training in the future? I'm alright for the moment, but I would consider it for an animal with unusual needs.
12) Do you have a dog Door Flap? No I don't. She's trained enough to be able to let me know when she needs to go out.
13: Do you let your dog(s):
a. on your lap? Yes, all the time.
b. on your sofa/chair? Yes, although in some cases she has a blanket.
c. on your bed? Yes.
d. dig in the garden? She's never once even wanted to thankfully.
e. eat food from your plate? Not while I'm still eating no. If there are no bones or substances (such as salt) on the plate at the end of my meal, She can 'clean' it once it touches the floor. She wont overstep this boundry...it MUST be on the floor.
14) What type of lead do you use? Extendable lead.
15) Do you use any negative reinforcers (discs, correction spray, electric collar)? Tried them, they didn't work. Loud noises have worked a treat.
16) What would you do if your dog:
a. licked your face? Depends where. I would clean it off at any rate, but its very sweet for her to do so.
b. started jumping up at you? Pick her up. She only does it if she's nervous.
c. nudged their food bowl? She doesn't do this. We have a feeding schedule.
d. pulled on the lead during a walk? Pull her back. Sometimes I have to stop. It's the only way.
e. disappears during a walk? Doesn't happen. Jack Russel Terriors are very clingy.
17) Does your dog exhibit any behaviour that is undesirable to you? If yes, what? I wish I'd never taught her about post. We've had several things bitten through and she's had several teeth removed from accidently biting the post-flap. I also wish she didn't scream so much...you heard me 'scream'...and this occures when people come to the house..
18)Would you say your dog is:
a. aggressive? Not even the slightest. Towards other dogs she can be touchy.
b. fearful? Yes. We suspect she was abused. She especially doesn't like children, loud noises and sticks.
c. destructive? Only to post and her toys.
d. disobedient? No.
