I love my hoops as much as I love poi and staff and I noticed there was a few other hooping hoppers out there. So I thought HOP needed a hooping thread for us to chat about tricks and share our love for hoops. ubblove
I have been hooping for quite awhile now and have mastered quite a few tricks but I still havn't figured how to flick it up off the ground and move it up my legs. I can get it from my knees up but I saw this chic at the a circus and she had the hoops all on the ground and was bringing them up her legs one by one. It looked awesome.
I've got an idea of what I gotta do but havn't quite got it. I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips on this?
Thanks

So just bring UCoF and show up yourself. There's still time to buy tickets.

Molly I think I kind of get it now. I've just got to do it infront of someone else and ask them if it looks right. I think I have the hoop too far up my arm though. I'm still working on it biggrin

Ooops, bad Molly failing to get back to that explanation.

Further up the arm makes it harder but the matrix does look nicer right up on the shoulders so it passes under your chin at the front.

Try kneeling down whilst hooping round your middle - that's strangely hard.
Ooo and hoop vertically round your elbow and throw it up in the air (the hoop, not the elbow)
And a nice bit of a halo roll across your back
And silliest of all do the hip-thrusting cancan to make your hoop wiggle diagonally bounce

mmmm, groovehoops classes smile

I see you can get travel hoops that coil up and you then pop the connector in and tape it up when you want to use it. Do you reckon that cutting the tape on my regular hoop, coiling and tying it up (taking the connector so it won't get lost) for flights and then reassembling it will hurt it? I’m a bit wary of it going out of shape, but I can’t really imagine that the hoops that are sold as coiled travel hoops are made of anything special that springs back into shape better than regular tubing - but I could always be wrong. I’m happy to re-tape the join each time – it might not look quite as pretty but I’m happy to sacrifice a teeny bit of aesthetics for ease and comfort (this may explain why I live in jeans and a ponytail…)

This would also seem to solve any little problems like wrestling with a full-size hoop on tubes and buses, which just isn’t fun. It might also be more resilient on airport carosels and less likely to get damaged by doors shutting on it and stuff (I'm very accident-prone as you know). Do you guys reckon doing this will lead to hoopy disaster or have I just made my life easier?

Thanks, mwah, x M

I think Lynne had problems getting the hoops to actually stay coiled and not pop open. I would send her a message and ask if she had any suggestions. Maybe a stock of cable ties would help?

NYC had a hoop that had one side of the connector filed down so that it just slid inside the other end of the hoop but didn't 'stick' there. It then had a strip of velcro extending from one end of the hoop to stick to the other end. That bit was most handy because when you coiled the hoop up for going places the velcro held the hoop in its smaller coiled state.

Otherwise I suppose plenty of tape would do the job just as well.

As for keeping their shape they spring back very well and if they don't then it's just an extra challenge wink

Miranda if you are talking about the hoop you had from me I think you will find it UBER hard to coil the 32mm pipe up. Its hard enough to double up the 25mm pipe. The 32mm is too ridged. If you are really worried I can try and make you a 25mm sectioned hoop that you can dismantle. Putting a bungee cord through should stop all the pieces when slotted back together from falling apart when you hoop (a bit like a circular tent pole). I'll have a go later...... not sure where I'll get a bungee that long but I'll have a look if you want me to. When do you set off travelling. How long do I have to perfect the hoop? If it works out it could fit into a bag..... well maybe a custom made bag.

4 sections or 5?

Wow, thanks Skully (and Gayle and Molly). You guys are the best hug

Skully, I leave on January 20th, so, uh, what's that 7 weeks? Eeeek, that's sooner than I thought. Would that be enough time for you with Xmas coming up and everything? I would be so grateful if you could do that - how much would you want for it? It would be amazing to have a hoop I could chuck in a bag rather than trying to drag a giant one around! I'll leave the details up to you, but pink and orange colours would be fab to match my new hair. Wow, yay! bounce2 hug

I don't know what it will cost until I've made it. I'll try and sorce some bungee cord.

The connectors I have are uber tight so I'm going to have to shave one end of them down and I'm not sure if once slimmed down they will be strong enough. I'll give it a go and if it works you get first refusal on buying it ok.

Orange and Pink is do-able.

After a bit of a search on-line (not an extensive one I admit, due to the state of my computer) I'm finding it hard to find bungee cord sold by the meter in the UK. I've found a few places that will sell me 50m, but I really don't want to be buying that much as with postage and V.A.T. the cheapest I could find would be £40-ish.

Anyone know where I can get about 5m of the stuff? I was thinking of getting the 5mm-8mm thickness.

Is any of this the right sort of stuff? It doesn't seem to come by the metre but at least comes in smaller quantities than 50m.

- the bungee cord is a little way down the page.

- ditto.
