One thing I couldnt find is what to have in a first aid kit/fire kit.

Is it the Truth?
Is it Fair to all concerned?
Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

Good suggestion, Gnor.

Another...though this might require a bit more work, but if someone gets something wrong, give an explination as to why the answer is wrong, and point out the correct answer.

It is definitely a great start!

I got 23 out of 26 correct. 2 of those I got wrong for being too cautious with really serious burns apparently (prefering to let medical professionals take chrge of them from the outset).

And as I suspected, the other one I got wrong, I actually got correct - the tip of the flame is NOT the hottest part!

near the outer edge of the flame near the middle is the hottest (not the middle interior, and not the middle outside edge, but somewhere inbetween, closer to the outside edge.

to see a plot, go here:

https://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/SD%20MethaneFlameTemp.gif

the tip does, however, have the most heat capacity (integrate over volume and temperature - ie, basically compare how much area is beneath each curve) and will therfore burn you faster - but it is not the "hottest" part in terms of temperature... for a monocromatic flame.

but it gets more complicated than that - and if you have a multi colored flame, then the higher frequency color part (blue or green) part will have much more energy and will be much hotter than than the lower frequency color part (yellow or red flame). you will note that blue flames are normally closer to the base. In this case, the combination of highest frequency flame (highest energy), highest heat capacity, and highest temperature will likely max out near the tip of the highest frequency color part of the flame on the flanks.

I got 19 correct smile

Some of the answers are wrong (in my personal opinion).

A burn should never be immersed in water. The best thing to fdo is to put the burn under running cold water, as this will cool down the area much more efficiently.

Oh and the first thing you should always do when it comes to burns, is put them straight under cold running water.

Such as in questions 20 and 21.

Im not so sure about the answer to 22. I put False... it says this is wrong. This may or may not be correct smile

Apart from that.

I gives it a jonny Ucof two thumbs up.

i agree with you, i also say that anyburn should be taken with extreme care

does anyone know if covering the burn in an object such as cling film while going to hosiptalis a good idea, as its the oxygen that causes the burn to continue?

i hear this a while back, but surly its not the best ideA?

Clingfilm is great for severed digits, or for putting the tip of your nose in, should that ever fall off.

Pack the severed member (....... umm) in the clingfilm, then place between frozen food.

Bags of peas are much better to use than 2 frozen battered cod fillets.

tut tut ucof.

running water has more chance of bursting a blister or breaking the skin.
and immersion cools an area far more efficiently than a stream would - especdially if it is a large area.

and questions 20 and 21 definitely have correct answers - if you use cold water on second or third degree burns, you increase the risk of shock.

Not it you use a gentle stream, and direct it above the blister. When it hit your arm it will slow down. But you already knew this smile

Fair point.

But in all the years of me knowing BASIC first aid (such as burns and cuts etc), I have never been told to immerse the burn in water. I have always been told, cold running water.

st john's used to tell people cold running water cos its easier to remember and to find in an emergency than a clean container and clean, cool water.

what is a studnet and what exactly do you plan on catching with it?

I was told that on large burns (people keep confusing me with first, second, third and fourth definitions. 3 first aid courses and they always seem to change... Stuff like if you have a burn bigger that the size of your palm, it gets bumped up a class...) putting / running them under 'lukewarm' (though not actually that warm) then cold water would be better? As the change in temperature for the burn would be smoother. I don't think I would actually do this, since burns cause deep heating of the tissue and the running under cold water for ten minutes business is usually to combat this deep heat.

Cling film is so that the burn is kept free from infection. (They use it on large tattoos are well... Not that I have any of those... wink )

What I would really like to see at the end of the quiz, is explainations of your wrong answers and a printable info sheet about burns, what to do in case of a burn, what to have in a first aid kit, fire performance safety, inflammable / nonflammable definations as well as flame resistant. Flame retardents and making clothing flame retardent... Maybe there's one already... I will go check...

Godd work though...

I got 5 wrong... which isnt too bad...

But yes, I agree that there should be real answers to questions, and explanations as to why the answers are the answers.

mcp even if you put cold water with a slight hint of warm, wouldnt you really feel the warm as the burn would make the heat more intense? or am I thinking of something else?

What they always fail to say is Don't use lubricated ones! It is a severe hassle trying to hold onto something designed to, er, well, you know (this is a family site, after all! biggrin ) and the flavour is, well (oh, I'll just stop now ubblol)
