Aomori Nebuta Matsuri
Sunday 15th September 2002
(as part of the Thames Festival 2002, 13th-15th
September 2002)

The Nebuta Matsuri, a festival celebrated in Aomori Prefecture, is a long-standing tradition now recognised as a priceless cultural heritage. Nebuta sculptures are made of bamboo, wood, and paper in the shape of popular, traditional figures such as armour-clad samurai. These images can be of immense size, reaching heights of five meters, widths of nine meters and depths of seven meters. The Nebuta are paraded through the streets, accompanied by Japanese drums and flutes and elaborately dressed dancers.

I attended the Neputa matsuri in Hirosaki (almost the same as the Aomori Nebuta, but with different float designs). It's one of my fondest memories.

Did anyone make it to the Thames Festival Night procession? I had a great time leaping round the place in my yukata chanting like a mad woman! For those of you who did not attend it was a lovely evening and there was a fantastic athmosphere.

tug boats with flame throwers! How cool was that! I want one! If you missed them it serves you right for being so lazy! Also an impressive firework display.
