i've heard lots of people say we're "poisters", but i prefer the term "poi-ist".
no reason, just makes me think of capoeira!

Ive heard poisters mainly too, or poiers (pronounced poyers) i guess poi-ist tho that sounds more like one person who poi's.

i call my self a spinner, cos must of teh objects i use, poi, diabolo, staff....spin!

I try to refer to myself as a Firedancer, but otherwise fire-spinner will do.
A while ago, a number of people referred to our art as swinging, but it got confused with another age-old pastime and there was much ickiness on the site

I call myself a spinner.. for me personally, I don't really like the term 'dancer' coz I've got the lower body grace of an elephant but I've seen people trip the light fantastic with poi in their hands.. truely gracefull..

I've also been faced with this naming problem, though it seems even harder to define in french (there's no real word for spinning OR twirling, the closest definition, 'tournoyer', meaning turning fast). Then I have to try and explain what it is, simplest thing is telling them I juggle chains. I take it they either understand, or are too perplexed to ask for furter information.
I personnaly like poi-ist, sounds... wise, like someone that follows the path of poi. Fire-dancer, I find, applies to fire arts only, leaves out the poi community that play with non-firey toys.
The path of Poi... I like that.

Personally I call myself a poi person and others simular to me in that respect are poi people. which kind of sounds like pod people. which reminds of mystery science theater. which makes me giggle

I ten to call myself a firedancer, because I do dance, and I do dance with fire. Otherwise, I tend to refer to others as either spinners or fire artists (Because lets face it, no matter what critics may say, its truly an art form, although some think its some sort of cult )
