Examples of traditional poi, weapons and training implements.
The first is long poi and was performed by St Josephs College (USA equivalent High School) while attending a trade show in China

This video is not poi, it shows the use of the mere, training used to strengthen the wrist is poi, tiaha and long stick.

Tiki Taane: Tangaroa. The facial expression from the women is called Pukana. The purpose is to show the whites of the eyes, as the eyes are the window to the soul and say alot about the persons heart. Women never Wero (poke tongue)! Traditional maori culture is fully accepted at the majority of events in NZ and Maori will mix traditional and modern, I hope that answers some of the "evolution of poi" questions.

This is a modern dance troupe's interpretation of the poi and patu. They visited NZ 2008 and stayed on the Marae. The music is an old geneological chant called Pinepine te Kura.
