Hello, hello and welcome to the all-new, shiny thread for fire dancers, spinners, object manipulators, drummers, musicians and anyone else interested in these arts anywhere in Ireland.

Our community started coming together a few years ago, and it's grown to include people from all over the country...

If you are new to poi or staff or spinning stuff and want to meet up with any of the Irish spinners, please post in this thread, introduce yourself and feel free to come along to the workshops, gatherings or events that get talked about.

Also, if you'd like to be on my mailing list for fire gatherings and other juggling events, please PM me your email address and I'll add it. The fire gathering takes place fortnightly in Belfast, but it's one way to keep in touch with everyone.

So welcome, and hope to see you soon wave

A mate of mine had that about two weeks ago. She was well pleased with the results. She never mentioned any pain, just that they were a little sensitive to sunlight, but a couple of days in sunglasses, and she was fine.

Good luck, I'm sure you won't need it.

French, I had laser surgery a year ago and it was absolutely the best money I have ever spent (still spending actually since I'm nowhere near paying it off!!). But it was so worth it. I went from a blind-as-a-bat prescription of 20/400 to better-than-perfect 20/14, and my night vision has tremendously improved. The results were beyond my expectations. Your vision will be hazy for a day or two and I would recommend working as little as possible for the week following because a lot of care is required. They gave me some good pain meds, but I didnt need them, I had no pain. The freedom is amazing after wearing contacts for so long. You will love it! Good luck!! smile

Thanks Xina, Well guys, went through with the surgery this morning, I'm really proud of myself because I was terrified but I did it anyway. I was sore for a couple of hours but I slept for a few hours and now I've no pain at all. I'll have to use drops a few times a day for the next while but I can already see almost perfectly, it's amazing to be able to see this well, I've been using really strong glasses since I was 14 so to be able to see things so perfectly is brilliant. Hurrah for technology!!!!!

See you around (ha ha)

Hey Mairead....very nice

Completly forgot that u were going for that layer eye thingy...i wish i could bring u back something nice from Berlin but theres flip all to buy u...also me and Martin have hardly been in the city ... actually not at all...

For anyone whos interested, ive just spent a week in the Juggling Catacombs in Berlin which is a training centre for the performance arts (Namely juggling, acrobatics, aerial work as well as hoop and staff and ot her things)...its in the heart of Berlin and is an amazing and really cool place to come, hang out and train on whatever u want to work on....i had a week workshop with Marco Paoletti which was amazing but i was talking with Alan Blim (The director) and he was saying that there are other performers here who arent mentioned on the main website but who will give workshops ...the address is https://www.jonglierkatakomben.de/ and if have any other questions u can either contact them or email me (ianmoss101 at gmail.com)

The school is going through some tough times financially at the moment (i think) and the more aware people are of it and its offerings the better it will be.... i would recommend it to anyone...its Wonderbar!!!

You my friend, i will defend and if we change, well i'll love you anyway

Burn off all fuel on your staff by letting the staff burn without spinning until it goes out naturally. Yes, i know it's not good for the kevlar, but you need to remove as much parafin smell as possible. Last time I flew with my poi, I also cleaned the wicks off with baby wipes, removing any soot, and again, getting rid of some of the smell. I didn't notice any problem with the lifespan of the wicks afterwards. Definately wrap the wicks well in plastic.

In terms of your case - can you get it cleaned somehow? Or put it and your staff in a document tube (if it'll fit) - the plastic telescoping ones are quite cool, and should keep any smells in. Airport security are used to seeing these, so they don't look on them as all that strange. Search for other threads on this topic, and you'll find other advice. Irish airport security is much the same as any other airport security, I'm not aware of it being any more or less strict than anywhere else.

Basically, try to get rid of any and all parafin, so that you can look them in the eye, and tell them truthfully that it's not flammable.

Cheers Helen, my staff sailed through dispite the recent terrorist activity, am now in sunny Dublin.

Anyone who fancys hooking up for a beer or a spin in Dublin send me a PM, I'll be here for another two days.
If anyone could tell me some spinning friendly places I'd be very grateful. I've got all the juggling club names and times, but I need to fill my days with staff too. wink
Ta Ta for now.

Dont really know why am writing this, seen as though this board has gotten so damn stale lately, but sure, i'm workin doin nuthin as usual (mwwuuhhaahahaha) so i thought i might as well let ye know how my wkend went!!

Well, wat a wkend it was!! The State of Mantua, absolutely brilliant festy, just as good if not better than Life-festy. Plenty of reggea, dub, small amounts of rock and stuff but for me it was all about the Drum n Bass + Jungle!! A whole tent dedicated to it for the wkend - absolutely mint!! The place was goin off from the minute i got, fair balls to all the ravers who were goin till 8am monday........messy as fu*k!!!!!!

Met some really really cool people, including a fellow poi-er from DrumShambles-Shambo i believe, who says she gonna sort me out wit a job doin poi, which would be sweet if that worked out!!

The funniest thing of the wkend was when some jumped up wannabe farmer hippy mowed the whole cinema tent down with the on site tractor!!

Priceless...

Wouldn't say there'll be a huge turn out in Stephen's Green, unless it's sunny. If you're in Dublin anyway though, you should risk it, there's usually someone there, if not you can practise by yourself, maybe try the btb 5beat weave? weavesmiley, anyway have fun biggrin

Yeah i heard that its usually during the wk, but unfortunately i have to work...god dammit...so midwk is really hard for me! Finished my placement in a month, then i've a month off, then back to uni. So maybe i'll try get up when i'm off!!

Flowers, yeah mine arent great to be honest, the one where my arms are goin forwards along with the poi arent bad, but the one where ur arms move in the opposite direction of the poi are terrible. Quite boring to practice tho i find...'spose cuz u cant see it! But yeah good idea, try and master flowers for the nxt couple of weeks!!! Cheers mate!! biggrin

hey guys, hope everyone is doing well in spite of this crappy excuse for summer weather!

i have a question for all you groovy fireheads!
after messing around with beginner poi for a couple of months now, i'm ready to buy my first set of fire poi! biggrin

soooo... i would love to hear your recommendations on what kind i should get! i'm really thinking about the cathedral ball chain set on this site. or do you think, being a newbie, i should start with something like the weka set, with smaller flames? please give me your thoughts!

thanks guys!

Cathedral link chain would be my preferance...thats the first ones i bought about two yrs ago didnt change them until i feckin got them taken off me in Manchester airport.

They'll last practically forever, they look really good, only thing is they're quite heavy and take a bit of gettin used to. Just practice with them before lightinn them!!

hope this helps

Cathedrals have ferocious flames on em, and burn for decades, so their good in that regard, but only if you feel comfortable with that...LOL! SHades of Grey how are ye! Yeah those 5 pointed star things are odd, it forces the poi into anti spin, then into a stall and back to normal time...Ive been messing with those "one over the shoulder, one behind the back" stall things you were showing me...Theyre Purdy...Hows the over the head isolation coming ?
