I think the theme is obvious, for example:
-industrial buildings
-towers
-bridges
-hilltops
-sewers
-subways
-caves
etc.

for a literal definition of obscure the range would be huge, I reckon somewhere with an interesting name or setting. A locality called Backwater up near Armidale (Oz), or Windwhistle in NZ are the first to spring to mind.
The day we rode through Windwhistle it was - about 120k, it rolled a semi-trailer, so it could qualify for extreme at the same time.
