I have never been one for taking photos but I will be seeing a lot of things over the time to come and thought I would share where I am and what I am doing with the good people of HoP. Sorry most of the pics will be via facebook.

My first stop was Kansas. At first, it was hard to see what was remarkable until I stopped off the road in a place called the Flint Hills.

Beyond this fence there is empty native prairie as far as you can see.

It continues on 360 degrees with only a major roadway to interrupt it.

I could only imagine what the settlers must have felt looking into the distant future, knowing that it would take them days to travel to the horizon.

I was suddenly struck at what was remarkable about Kansas. It was still relatively pure. In the middle of the third most heavily populated country on the planet, it offered a view into the distant past and humbled me. I have never in my life see so far across the land and no picture could do justice to the view or to the emotion it can evoke.

No tour de America would be complete, or so I am told, without starting a bourgeois shot glass collection. I chose a Kansas icon.

I said goodbye to Kansas and the Great Plains on 15-10-2010 and drove approximately 500 miles to Amarillo, Texas. New wonders and sites await me in the Llano Estacado.

Tests were done and people found that Kansas is indeed flatter than a pancake. Don't believe me? Google it!

I did some rooglesearch*, and it turns out, that indeed there was a joint study by Texas State University and Arizona State University.

*Rooglesearch: You heard it here first kidds! Refuge coined a term, don't alert Oxford without giving me proper credit.

Looking out over Palo Duro Canyon, Texas

A cave inside Palo Duro. It was treacherous to get to but I go to it. grin

Something about this view made me think of cheesy old westerns with John Flippin' Wayne...

No trip into a canyon would be complete without a standing rock!

And I couldn't forget my shot glass laugh3

So...Amarillo I endured more of the uninteresting places that the continental US has to offer. Eg. Lubbock, TX. and Enid, OK. I wound up in Springfield, MO. which is good for one reason...Outdoor world! I am officially beyond broke now. But I have a grip of outdoor goodies and some phone pics of the exhibits I can treasure forever.

This was meant to be an alligator exhibit but the rocks in the foreground look rather thallic.

This Alligator Gar is as big as me and makes me think twice about ever swimming in the water again! You never want to see the teeth on this thing.

Yet another reason I am apprehensive about going into the water. This snapping turtle was bigger than me and I have read snapping turtle horror stories.

Non-Https Image Link

I think this was the smallest water life in this place, only about half as big as me.

And finally, my bourgeois shot glass smile

Next stop Tulsa, OK.
