Hello All:
I am a percussion instructor trying to figure out how to do this

(start at 5:57)
What research I've done leads me to want to try an aluminum tube with wick on the end. We use kevlar drum heads, by the way.

So I've come to a community of experienced folk to get some guidance.

Thanks in advance!

That's quite impressive. You could try a couple of things with this...

- As you said, aluminum with kevlar wrapped around it - would make for a bulky head...

- You could also go for a very thin rod, solid, not hollow, and pad it out with kevlar at the end. this would make for a much longer burn time, since there would be more wicking... You'd then have to pad the other end for the grip, or you could cut a drumstick in half, drill out the middle and insert the rod into the drumstick so that it feels more like a drumstick to drum with.

The other option would be to grab one of these things:

That might suit the purpose, but again, creating a handle comfortable enough to drum with would be your issue. You could use the standard tennis racquet grip, that should do the trick. smile

Hope this helped some!

Thanks for the reply!
How many 'layers' are needed for a 45 second burn? If it's only 2 or 3 it would be fine. The aluminum tube will give a good drum feel for grip and weight.
Also, can anyone suggest a vendor/brand. And should it be fiberglass wick or kevlar?

Thanks again!

Depends on a couple of things. The tighter you wrap it, the longer it'll burn (less oxygen can get in and burn). The longer it is, and the more end of it that there is exposed, the shorter it will burn. I couldn't tell you how long a burn would last on them... But I'd go with kevlar wick.

One of my staffs, 3 inches of wicking wide wound tight around a aluminum staff 6 times lasts me about 5 minutes, and can soak up about half a cup of kero or so... So you could work it out from that. But ultimately, experiment. smile

I thought this was going to be a fried chicken joke.

'We're all mad here. I'm mad, you're mad." [said the Cat.]
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "Or you wouldn't have come here."
