I couldn't seem to find anything like this. Well, A couple kind of, but the links didn't work at all. So here this is. A thread for discussing your/any other wick designs that you know and have had experience with. Mainly to help everybody find out what kind of wicks they want when they want to make them without having to spend all their money on rope/wick tape/whatever.

I'll start mine with a question, I want to make Isis poi. But, I want to make a nice cracked/open surface. Would you use the same amount of wick on the outside that you do on the inside, or more? For example, I saw a video that said 4ft for the inside weave, then 6 for the outside. It's a crown on the inside and another over itself for reference of what I'm talking about. I would buy rope, but then I'd have my dad going, "You're spending too much money! Blah blah blah! You're buying things too often! Blah blah blah!" "But dad!"

I'd say put the swivel in the eyebolt as it won't come apart like split rings may do, and one quicklink at the bottom isn't bad, but having handle-link-swivel-link-chain-link-swivel-link-poi is too much for me. My new setup will be: Pro-series handle-link-chain-link-(swivel put in eyebolt of poi)
I would just way avoid as many additional hardware as possible. And use split rings only if it gets too clunky because they can be unreliable at times. Although I found some at a shop nearby that might work and should test them out smile

if the split ring is heavy duty, I think it alright.
I only use swivels at the top and I'd have to use a split ring at the bottom (with or without a swivel) anyway...I dislike those big oval quicklinks...

Ok then, whatever works for you is always fine smile Just as long as you accommodate for any possible dangers. What I might do whenever I do get a smaller chain is put on 2 split rings. Just remember to always check your rings and to test them out thoroughly in practice before you burn with them, and maybe put on 2 of them if it turns out you have to, still doesn't add bulkyness grin I don't think at least.

in general split rings = bad, about the only exception is specialized hardened steel deep sea fishing split rings which need special pliers to open and you could swing a cow about with. generally quicklinks are the way to go for safety and easy of use

I was gunna say nick woosley used split rings. Certainly not bad ones, they were the deep sea ones that are hard to work with.

Just rock on down to a fishing store. Outdoor stores didnt have anything in them that I liked, but the specialised fishing shops did.

I have a store that sells stainless sell split rings. They sell a small bag for about $10. Would these be those ones you could swing a cow on?

In my opinion probably not SOD. Nick Woosley said that he got his from a deep sea fishing store. Also he tested them against 2 cars pulling on it, and stuff like that. Dunno exactly but theirs some video on playpoi. Either way the ones he used were made for catching sharks

If I remember correctly, it is only 3 strands.

The sennit poi uses 4 ropes, but because they loop eachother at the bottom, it uses an 8-strand sennit. A 4-strand would be like a circle or a square stitch.

This poi is umm... I can't explain, but it's this: https://www.laneyards.com/2008/11/corkscrew-supertwist-stitch.html

I used (per head) 3 strands-7ft and 1 strand-14ft. It was all 1 inch thin kevlar folded in half. You could also get 1/2" tape from FireMecca I now know -.-

If you look on that laneyard site I finished it like they do there and that put it up to 8 inches.

Btw those heads only cost me $40 for both of them! grin

Those poi are such a perfect weight when they're soaked ^_^ They're lighter than my practice heads. They have a perfect weight/drag ratio for me because everything just feels so... I can't really explain. But they are so censored epic. When I stopped to swing them back and forth the flame went up like 3ft!
