No BS. Well, I assisted in delivery of two babies tonight, anyways. Tonight is my first night on call on my obstetrics and gynecology rotation.

The first was a baby boy, premature. The second was a healthy, 9-pound baby girl! Yes, NINE POUNDS! That delivery took forever. Poor mom was on the verge of giving up.

Two weeks ago today, I watched the tragedy of my father's death. Today, I watched the miracle of birth...twice. I only wish that I could call my dad up and tell him about it. But I felt his spirit in the delivery room tonight. He was there with me and he was loving it.

Ka-wow. What a night. And I will never forget the first baby I helped deliver. A premature boy with the initials M.S.

Now, if you'll excuse me, it's 4:00 AM and I need to be awake another 16 hours yet (I've already been awake 23), so I need to get some coffee.

You've seen almost everything now, Mike.

The only thing left is to see your own baby being delivered...that will be the finishing touch.

(PS My little monster was 9.5 pounds, even bigger than that 'little' girl)

Charles, I'm gay, remember? Actually, one of the babies I delivered was to a father who is an anesthesiology resident.

Just as I finished my last post, I was called away to assist in a C-section, which was amaaaaazing!! An 8 lb. 15 oz. baby boy.

So that brings the total to three.

Awwwwwwww

Having never seen up close the miracle of an human baby (I was kinda in the hospital when my littlest bro was born, but not present for the 'moment'), my closest experience is helping lamb a flock of sheep.

Its still pretty amazing after you've helped delivery this little bundle of legs thats all covered in many wonderful type of goo, at 2.30 on a cold April morning. But you put lamb and mum together, and a few bleats later, after some licking and nudging from mum, you've got the lamb taking its first few tentative steps.

I'll never grow bored of that feeling ya get then, having helped this new life into the world.

Spoiling Christmas for small children since 2003.

I think the freakiest (or most wonderful?) thing about birth would be realizing that the little thing you're holding right afterward was INSIDE YOU 30 SECONDS AGO! THE WHOLE BLOODY THING!

Such a unique feeling I will never get to experience...

But then I won't experience 18 hours of labour either.

Congrats Mike! That's as close as us XY types are going to get.

well, actually, i just kinda stood there and cheered the mum llama on, and tried not to get squeamish.

still, it was a lovely and intense moment!

Congrats Mike what a beautiful thing to experience! xoxoxox

Sir sheep, you are forgetting the best part of lambing...

Swinging the lamb gently around your head to clear the meconium and other gunk (and trying to innocently hit people nearby with it).

I've helped lamb before. The farmer reached in, tied a rope around the lamb's neck, and yelled "Pull, damnit!". That was in New Zealand.

But this was...amazing.

I have to agree with you there, Mike.

I was present during Jacub's birth (caesarian) and it's the most amazing thing anyone can ever experience, let alone more than once...

Escpecially whenthey are soo big, I still have no idea how he managed to fit inside my angel.

Charles,

I agree that it must be most amazing to watch your own child be born. I'm sad I'll likely never have that experience. But I am not chosen to have that experience, and I believe that maybe there is a reason. Those of us who cannot have our own are often the most loving of children in general. My best teachers in school were those who had none, so maybe it's appropriate that I want a career in pediatrics.

However, it was also interesting for me to observe the spectrum of experiences that I did.

The Indian family that had the C-section with all the relatives praying outside in the hallway, the single woman who had fled Africa and for whom we didn't know who the father was. The couple where she was a violinist for the Toledo Symphony and he was an anasthesia resident. Two first G1's (first pregnancy) and one G2 (second pregnancy) Interesting to compare the similarities and differences of this collection of people from such vastly different backgrounds going through this amazing experience.

I was there when my daughter was born. It was at the same time the best and one of the worst experiences of my life.

I did not enjoy seeing my ex in that kind of pain. And... I'm a very squeamish person. I could not even wash out the wound of one of my frogs after it had an abscess lanced. It took every bit of will power I had to not run screaming from the delivery room.

It was worth it all, however, the first time I held her.

Let me give you a bit of advice on two things NOT to do. Our doctor did both of them.

After the baby was delivered he held the placenta up to my ex and started explaining something about how my daughter was up against the shinny side. She said something along the line of “get that damn thing out of my face; I want to see my f*&king baby.”

The next thing he did wrong was when he was stitching up her episiotomy. We’ve all heard the jokes about putting in extra stitches, he actually turned to me and asked me if I wanted him to put a few extra in. If he wasn’t standing at my ex’s mangled genitals with a needle he would be dead today.
