Tests were completed last night and I now have the BEST TOY EVER.

Its a firestaff fitted with electric detonators in the wicks, a rechargable battery and a switch. Push a packet of flash powder into each end and when you push the button BOOM! Big flash which lights the wicks grin

Got a couple of adjustments to make, mostly to do with making the wicks light faster but it works!

I'll upload the video when I can get online somewhere thats not work.

Wow! I had been thinking about that one but was struggling with what to use as the ignition source... flash paper is a great idea!

The flash powder packets do work really well. You have to replace the electric detonators after each detonation so it works out costing about £3 each time (£1 each per detonator + flash powder + paper) Just built in a little cover at the ends to make this easy.

Choice of fuel is important too, we're using white meths so it will light easily.

The main issue at the moment is getting it to light quickly, idealy I'd like it to be *BOOM* and the staff to be fully lit. At the moment its only the ends of the wick which light so you have to wait a few seconds before starting to spin. Think the solution to that is having the wick extend out past the end of the staff tubing so that more of it will be contacted by the explosion.

If anyone has a go at anything like this BE VERY VERY CAREFUL!!! The guy that did the actual construction has a lot of experience in doing explosive stage effects. Flash powder burns very hot and will damage you if you're not careful!

With any luck we'll have a version for sale in the not too distant future anyway smile

Theres no way it would work as-is without the powder. Something we did play with was extending the switch from a bush-button lighter so the flame part was inside the wick. Our plan was to have lit the wicks then extinguished so they were still warm and that way when you clicked the button the wick would ignite. Could never get it working though.

I'll have a video up asap (maybe tonight actually smile ) bear in mind that the only one I've got so far isn't amazing quality, but it will show it working.

Not sure to be honest, I'm not the pyrotechnics expert! I'll ask John when I see him tomorrow. I assume flash cotton/paper just burn really fast and hot without the big flash?
