So I've noticed lately that there's some 1337 and other txt speak popping up.

I'm not a mod, but I figured I'd just give a bit of history on this. In general, I think we agreed a while back to go easy on using this shorthand.

It's not because we're the Grammar Gestapo, but because you have to remember that, although English is the language that we use on HoP, not everyone who uses HoP is a native English speaker!

So if u start txtspk cuz ur used 2 it lolz it makes it rilli hard 4 ppl from Spain or Norway 2 follow teh convo.

We're not demanding perfect spelling and grammar or anything silly like that. Just asking you not to txtspk as a matter of regular habit.

I bring this up because I'm bilingual and when I'm on some of my Spanish message boards, I sometimes have trouble with some of the posts because I don't get the Spanish txtspeak.

Sound reasonable?

I don't mean to hurl criticism your way, doppelGanger, but i don't feel that thats the message Doc was trying to convey and probably best for a different thread. The people Doc would most like to read what he has just written and not take offense (And he has put it in such a way that it would be difficult to take offense very deliberately) are the same people that you've essentially called idiots with the following post...

it would be neat if someone made a bit of php that allowed a person to convert shorthand to regular language before posting for those that are truely locked in their habbits of using shorthand.

The less people know the more they believe

LOL thats suprisingly true.

but richee knows what he's on about, and thats good enough for me smile

(richee is someone who works on the site and makes lots of test threads and posts and such and english isnt his first language, which results in some confusing posts, usually for a good reason!)

hope that was accurate. if you read this richee, i think you're awesome smile

That is so elite it's almost next level. I could barely comprehend that, which kinda proves your point of practicality.

I completely agree with the Doc...

English is my native language and i barely understand 'txtspk' let alone 'elite' speak!!

I'm learning other languages at the moment and I struggle so much when people even use just slang words let alone their txt abbreviations!!

Thanks Doc.
The main issue is foreign readers translating in thier heads or using translation software will find it difficult or impossible to read what's going on.
Having a browser with built in spell checking also helps.

Thanks for bringing this up Doc.
It is a HoP policy to try to be as clear as possible, and that came about when the whole raver speak thing happened and was hard to follow.

The issue I find with any form of translator is that slang and txtspk changes often. Anyone would be hard pressed to keep it up to date.

And yeah, Richee. We love him but I think he writes in Richee speak more than anything, but he does it in long handed english so we just nod and smile. wink hug to Richee.

P.L.U.R. wink

I used a 1337 generator to write it. I can't really take credit.

I have an issue with dodgy spelling (not that I'm saying I never type it)- in that I think I'm a bit OCD about it.. If I ever come across a word I think is wrong I have to immediately stop what I'm doing and go look it up (if I'm out somewhere, I have been known to write down a misspelled sign or suchlike, then look it up when I get home). Textspeak generates a 'feeling of wrongness' in my head which after a while can get almost physically painful.

However, I do fully realise this is me being a fruitcake, so it does not give me the right to shout at everyone else about spelling just 'cos I'm nuts. wink

I am like that if someone asks me something that I can not give a correct answer to immediately. I will look it up.

Can you not use a cellphone with predictive text by the way? You can then work out whether it is correct immediately.

Bugger I feel a language rant brewing lol.....

I dont use text speak on forums. Its a no no. it also comes across as immature imho. I Have a friend who covers her bebo facebook and other networking pages with phonetic letters, text speak and local speak - thats saying dinny canny (did not, can not in scotland)etc., and it really winds me up.

So does incorrect grammar. A lot of people - too many - will use "of" instead of "have" as in "I should of got it by tommorrow."What the hell are they teaching people in schools lately? Since when does a word that basically means from or belonging to, get used to replace a word that means to possess or to cause?

I really can't fathom why people can't even try to use even a little good grammar these days. It gets my goat it really does - my 4yr old knows the difference. Now THAT makes me smile smile
