Any of you out there play it?

I have four campaigns running right now. Three characters and one I'm DMing. Are there any other nerds about HOP?

Play every now and again.

I suspect I will be roped into at least one campaign soonish.

Something about stone-age tech with magic. Could be fun. wink

I'm a big video game, D&D nerd. I was raised on the stuff. Same with fantasy books. I'm sure that's why I live in a fantasy myself.

I'd come to South Africa and play with you but it's so far... frown

It's the best game I've found, I've wanted to run a campaign for years but I find I spread the time dedicated to creating a world too thin and the scope too broad, if I had help pinning it down it would get finished though.

Well, you could start off only creating a town and surrounds and make the world bigger as your party starts spreading their wings....

That way you only need to worry about a new area when approaching it.

Oh for sure, it's challenging that way too. So if your party goes somewhere you didn't expect then you have to make it up as you go. I usually just draw a basic map of the area, with cities and rivers and such, and think of the peoples and royalty when I get there. Makes things interesting for the DM. I've thought of some really awesome NPC's on the spot that have changed the course of the whole game.

Also true. It depends how subtly you can steer your players where you want them to go. Also, if they *really* pull something odd out of the bag, if you tell them that and ask for five minutes or so to make something up because you expected them to get washed away in the flood that would take them to your newly prepared area, but they found a good way to save themselves and have gone upstream or whatever, they will in all likelyhood be ok with it if you tell them...

Or what a friend of mine does: this random wizard appears and teleports you.

Although since that session also involved a steam-punk mecha, a goblin with rocket boots that exploded when hit with a fireball, a staff with a 100ft grappling cord that killed a horse on its first use, and one of our players running around naked chasing a minotaur with a dai-katana, this may may not be the best idea ever....

Random wizards and whatnot, pfft.
I have a homebrew world that I've spent years fleshing out before I played my 3.5E. :] So by now, I have everything out for them, but sometimes i still make random villages and such, but most are really nomadic tribes. Or getting decimated by the civil war that's lasted for centuries.

Depends how much your players care about the world, you don't have to flesh anything out if your characters don't mind the world having a basis of flawed logic.

In my experience though that kind of detracts from the ability to play the game, if your world makes sense your players can develop characters based on a working world model instead of "roll 4d6-1d".

I agree Lev. Usually I have a basic world drawn out and build it around my characters. Make it interesting for them.

I personally like the 4d6 for stats and then I look over them of course. The game is no fun if your PC's are OP, then it's gets harder to try and kill them and easy for them to survive. I'm a player in a lvl 14 game and a lvl 4 and honestly I think the 4 is more fun for our DM because he's not bent on throwing gods at us just to kill us, we're so fragile we have to run a lot of the time. Then again I love having a 14th lvl rogue/assasin. She's so freakin cool!

This past Sunday I played my 4th lvl fighter and I did spirited charge and got a crit at the same time and hit an orc with 40 damage! I was pretty pumped.

Then the half-mino half-orc came in. =\

A good DM is both at least as clever as any of their players and knows what the characters can handle, so just manipulate what will be scarier for your minmaxers and less scary for your RPers and there you go, balance.
Or yaknow, just make the game revolve less around the numbers.

I haven't played in awhile since the group kinda grew apart.

I started playing the original when I was 11. I'm not 35 and hate any version past 2.

I've also played several other table top RPG's. Marvel is the prevailing one in our household currently, though I am too busy to play that as well. lol

But yeah, pass the doritos, coke and oreos, pass the 10 sider and let's roll wink

Tell me more. I haven't had a chance to play in years. I am always the GM.
I am still not sure about 4th ed. Yet. I am not sure it is trying to back to 1st ed. or just dumbing the game down.

I'm back on scribbling my campaign into reality slowly, I put in a few hours a week.
I'm drawing out a macro continent in terrain first, I've got 1/12 of it done so far and I'll post it in my album when I'm done for everyone to use.

Using graph paper the continent is separated into 6 sections on a silhouette map.

Those sections I've taken one at a time and drawn up in double the original height and width this time including terrain (1 per square) and on the back has the plot triggers, history, terrain and wildlife of the area.

Then, taking that I split the section into 4 pieces and blew it up so those 1square terrain blocks are now 2x2 blocks.

Following this process I should get a map of the continent in a month or two casually, on graph and detailed.

I mean I could just buy a module but I like to create my own world, it's fun you know?

Just get a chatroom. Chatroom that can show/hide dice rolls work very well, aka Gametable, although to do private rolls in the case of a DM, you'll have to roll soemwhere other thant eh chat client itself.

It's also good for private messages, so players won't see each other handing notes or whispering to the DM.

I've played something like that before, it was pretty fun.

I play 3.5, so far I'm not wanting to get into 4.0 aside from the added races and classes. Maybe I'm old fashion.
