So, as has been pointed out in the "Is it quieter around here lately?" the boards are kinda dead.

Things really started to turn quiet around April/May of this year and I figured it was just part of the normal cycles that we see here of flurries of activity and then periods of less activity.

It's November and the trend continues. In Social Chat, only six posts were made over a period of four days. I haven't been posting much lately because there haven't been posts to respond to. In seven years as a HoP member, I have never seen anything like it.

Even worse, Josh and Kate were going to have a mini-Doof tomorrow night at their place in my honor and it appears that very few people will be coming. This disappoints me. It means that our community is collapsing and I can't figure out why this is happening.

But more important than the discussion of why is how to fix it. This community was an amazing, active, warm, loving family consisting of tens of thousands of spinners all over the world. I don't think the blame can be placed in the hands of any individual.

Did the community move to Facebook? If so, can we use that to our advantage? Is there something that we can do to make this forum more conducive to gatherings and socialization?

What are your ideas?

And please, if you know someone who has gone silent, encourage them to come back.

I Just stopped posting in Social chat because I'm not chatty... and I'm not social wink

I do wonder if there was a competition for active posters if that may get more action or if it would fill the board up with spam. I look at the competitions etc, every now and then, but I've eased back my younger competetive edge so generally just peruse the forums.

A couple of balls short of a full cascade... or maybe a few cards short of a deck... we'll see how this all fans out.

is it about postwhoring? I don't think so.

is it about your brekfast? maybe - and if so, then it's because by telling us that you just had cinnamon porridge with cherries (yum, thank you Kyle) it tells us that you do love life in your own way and that you care letting us know about it.

If you tell us that you love guns, I for my part will not side it - but this wouldn't stop me from helping you out, lending you a shoulder if you're feeling down.

I've been the most unchatty person on this board and you only found me in SD, where I might (unintentionally) have offended pretty much every body that didn't agree with what I felt to be "right". And sometimes even those who did agree.

But for me it's really coming to the point of 'understanding'. Not about latent softness (where it's inapropriate) but about learning who you are and - surprisingly - this board helped me to shape my opinions. (Still working on how to get them across tho') wink I for my part like to know what you're thinking - if you keep it under 500 letters that is...

I think of life like an onion pick the analogy that fits you best wink

1) Lots of layers
2) Get it wrong and you'll cry.
3) smells a bit funny
4) Comes from and returns to the earth
5) hangs around in groups at the shops
6) never rolls smoothly
7) made this up as I went along
8) will get back on topic.

I don't think it's about postwhoring. I think maybe a competition for the most useful/insightful new thread each month, may make people try a bit harder at their toys and come up with some intersting stuff. Push the boundaries a little. It' doesn't even need a tangible prize. Just the title "june winner of best thread" woould go in my signature laugh3 (but I'd celebrate any title I got)
If it helps I do point everyone I teach at workshops who shows interest towards Home of Poi (and Southern Lights of course lol) I wonder how many (if any) I have pointed here have become members who are active I don't really mention my hop name in company much apart from with a few Hoppers I befriended when I joined.

I [semi] agree with your point about poi being a "fad". I first picked up poi near on 5 years ago now and I used to do it every weekend. I then found this notice board and became a "frequent flyer" until a second job took over most of my spare time. I've still got my first ever poi, and I get them out every time I go on holiday for literally the entire time I'm away, despite being the only person with a set.

My point being, I now have several sets and I'm back in the realm of HoP so you might be able to take the spinner away from the poi but not the poi out of the spinner.

Forgive the bluntness, but if a community fails, it’s largely down to its members. To get back on track, effort from everyone who is remotely bothered is needed. Start with organising more meets. Back in the day there used to be loads of meetings!! With the recession kicking in, what better [and cheaper] way to spend an evening than in a park, spinning?

Pull out my pin, throw me in to a room and see what happens!

Sir I really agree with what you say - it's down to the members. And by that it really doesn't matter whether or not you're still spinning...

What I like(d) about this community is that I met so many ppl who had the same basic interest (poi) and expressed themselves here. It's fascinating to watch just HOW MANY different spinners are out there and how most of them have some common denominators:

- kindness
- respect
- intelligence and
- balls

How do I burn down a whole town using half a litre of paraffin?
Also, my staff is about 87cm long because its supposed to represent a samoan fireknife. How difficult would it be to convert to using a long staff? baring in mind that half of my moves are throws, and the other half are fail.

Wait until there's a drought order around, and maximum fire warning. Head to nearby completely dry forest and start there.

Alternatively substitute forest with a volatile chemical factory.

I think that moving to a different length staff will be more or less difficult based on the weight of your new one and the weight of the existing one. I'd imagine your current staff is very light, so you may not have really found the 'flow', where you move with the staffs own momentum too much yet. You'll pick this up pretty quickly though.

I'd advise not going straight to a 150cm contact staff, as the weight will be enough that its possible to pull muscles etc if you're not used to it!

For throws, the length will make behind the back throw/catches harder.

A longer staff allows you to have larger wicks and bigger flames, but you'll have more difficulty with doubles and juggling.

My advice would be to get a 130cm-ish standard fire staff, give it a few weeks and then decide if you want to go longer and heavier for contact, or shorter and lighter for doubles/throws smile

As i understand it, fire knifes have a disproportionately large wick on the 'knife' end and a tiny hook at the smaller wick on the other end.

cheers for the inspiration beanie! keep your eye on itv news lol

willworkforfood actually my practice staffs are very heavy cause they are pickaxe handles with towels wrapped around them. my performing staff is a lot lighter and i use both to train with. The pickaxe handles are more to build muscle than anything, but everything I do on one I can do on the other... it just tends to hurt more and move a lot slower with the handles lol.

The idea I'm having is to get a 130cm pole, with a lot of wicking (maybe 3 65mm wicks spaced out on each side, the closest wicking towards the center of the staff being the same distance as it is on my fireknife staff). im just trying to find a way of doing the same stuff i do with a fireknife, but on a larger scale. I know I wont be able to go as fast, i just wanted to know if i can make such a thing.

and Bender, you're pretty much correct, although the hook is an integrated part of the knife, which is somewhat like a machete blade.
