Well, it will be a resistor of some description. Nichrome possibly?

Sounds like fuse wire? what happens to fuse wire when it has too high a current through it?

or some sort of flash product?

The trick you describe involves using a hidden electric igniter and/or some sort of heating filament, probably made from thin steel wool strand type of material, that either provides electric spark or heat for ignition. The smaller battery is easier to conceal and produce a less dangerous current. (Do more research electricity can be as dangerous as fire) A heat filament works by resisting electricity while conducting the resulting heat and in the process producing heat it often radiates light. (Look inside a toaster.)Using the wrong sort of material for a heat element can cause it to melt or even spark off in a short.(Scary and more costly to you than whatever $money$ you might save ) I'm also interested in combining fire performance and juggling/dexterity play into a magic act. I would love to hear more about your research into this trick and what method you use to finally achieve this illusion. Also have you tried Wire Grams or any of the other popular fire conjuring effects/gimmicks?
