The existance of flamethrowers says that someone, somewhere, at sometime said "I need to set that thing on fire, but it's too far away."

*giggles* I like how the chicken cracked the shits too...

Being a chicken myself, I know how annoying that can be.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Humans have a similar reflex that controls our eye movements.

I thought the guy was really cute and then I realized that he was a dead ringer for my boyfriend. Except brown hair. And thank god my BF doesn't have that accent. eek

BTW, the explanation for this has to do with the chicken's inner ear and a bunch of complex reflex arcs. The inner ears, on sensing movement, send a bunch of signals through reflex arcs to the muscles in the neck to stabilize the head. The eyes also help out with this by providing visual input. The human extraocular muscles (the muscles that control eye movements) are similarly wired to our inner ears to stabilize our movements.

To demonstrate this, grab a handy friend and ask him to look at a fixed target, like your nose. Then start to turn his head this way and that (helps if you warn him that you're going to do this; he may not be as patient as the chicken). You will notice that his eyes stay fixated on the same point and that he's not putting any effort into it.

This effect is so profound, and yet so unappreciated by all of us, that in the few patients where this reflex arc has been disturbed, they complain that their vision blurs with every heartbeat because the eyes cannot compensate for the slight head-bob that happens with every heartbeat.
