Because I am such a fan of The X-Men comic, I did not care for the first movie. I found it replete with inconsistencies and poorly representative of the characters. The storyline flowed horribly and I can only blame Hollywood for trying to cram 30 years of comic history into 115 minutes of screen time.

Same reason most comic book movies fail. If the movie were 3 hours long, they might have been able to pull it off successfully.

But like the first movie, I will go to see it, simply so I can rag on it in an educated and learned manner. Plus I heard the first 10 minutes is full of some truly amazing special effects as Nightcrawler 'bamfs' his way through the White House...Same thing that got me to go see Attack Of The Clones, I like the eye candy...

pheonix is the most powerful mutant ever to don a exploitatively tight jumpsuit. (Apocalypse does not count cus he's not a mutant )

Captain Picard said that 'it was her choice' to sacrifice her body (Bobby could just have created an ice barrier to protect the Blackbird instead) and alluded to the 'evolution' of man/mutantkind advancing every hundred eons or something.

Mystique is soo mega cool in X2!! in the *ahem* graphic novels, she's revealed to be Anna Paquin's/Rogue's mum. Rebecca Romijn is confirmed to appear in the third movie. horray for blue meanies!

also, Pyro becomes really good at firestaff, especially flame transfers...
Although i'm glad they left out Jubilee, leaving in Cable or Gambit would have been nice.

Leaving out Gambit? Didn't u notice the name 'Remy LeBeau' on that screen when [Person] is hacking into [Organisations] files late at night?

And that reflection in the water? Something flying with wings made of fire?

Look up the comic timeline of what came after the Proteus storyline.

I haven't seen it but I am guessing the shape in the water is the senator. Remember in the first movie how he supposedly died? More like he turned into some sort of crazy water mutant.

Spiderman, The Movie: Highest grossing film of all time...Highest gross for any movie on it's opening weekend....

Superman: Legendary modern film series, huge gross earning, loyal following.

Batman: Very high grosses at the box office and a respectable cult following.

Spawn: Had a respectful return at the box office for a 'lesser known' comic book hero...

There are more and there will be MANY more due to Spiderman's emmense success...

As far as staying true to story lines, it is a disappointment at times, but the writer in me KNOWS how incredibly difficult it is to stay spot on perfect when transfering a story from one media to another *(i.e. from comic book to film, novel to film, etc.)*

What I REALLY want to see is a "Calvin and Hobbes" live-action movie!!

Even counting the superhero films that have done really, really well recently (I don't count spawn as one, that bombed - and was pants), there's still a vast number of superhero films that were so bad they went straight to video, or were just made for tv to start with.

Even with my soft spot for bad superhero films (I really love the original spiderman films), I find it hard to defend most of them.

As an example of crapness: The Incredible Hulk: Married

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Did she die at the end?

I haven't seen it yet but it's easy to answer. In most movies of this genre the character only seems to have died but indeed does not. Mix that in with comics that do the same thing and it's almost a gaurantee that the character will live to be seen during a sequel.

One thing I really liked about the movie is that it takes a more humanistic approach with the characters. They're not superheroes anymore, they're people doing what they can with the gifts they've been given, and it's wonderful that the director didn't overlook that. Perfect example: They don't ever refer to each other by their "X-Men Code Names." I don't recall them ever referring to Cyclops once in the movie, he was always Scott Summers. Logan. Bobby. John (Pyro). Erik Magnus Lensherr (Magneto). Even Nightcrawler only mentions the name in passing, instead referring to himself always as Kurt Wagner.

Everyone except for Rogue and Storm, I noticed, go by their "People" names (presumably because "Storm" is easier for American audience to remember than "Ororo Munroe"). An interesting scene though is when Magneto asks Pyro what his "true" name is... that really hit me. This movie goes the extra mile in relating the characters to the audience, and I think that point is not lost on the director. Wonderful job all, and I can't wait for the next one to come out.

Disappointments: I wanted Iceman to do more. At the end I was thinking "There's all this freaking water! Why doesn't he get his moment in the spotlight?" Also, wasn't Colossus supposed to be Russian?

Oh, and Nightcrawler was always, and will always be (even moreso after this movie) my favorite X-Man.

Another oddball thought I had... would a feminist mutant superhero insist on being called an "X-Myn?"

To say that I enjoyed this film would be putting it mildly.

THIS MOVIE RULES!

I haven't had a movie going experience so enjoyable in the last..... well, a
damn long while (sorry, LotR is great and all, but X-Men always has and always
will mean more to me).

You must see this movie.

Heh, also I'm sitting here watching the DVD of the first Xmen movie which I
didn't own untill a few hours ago. X2 was so damn good I felt compelled to get
my hands on some more mutant action on my way home (didn't actually have the
Xmen DVD untill just now)..... damn I feel good ^_____^

Spoiler ahoy!

++++++(I warned you)

I was glad to see Wolverine in serious "**** you up" mode. When the commandos
invade the Xavier mansion he is NOT nice to them, not in the least. I
particularly liked the classic close-up shot where our hero has a knife to his
throat..... naturally Wolverine unleashes his 6 "knives" and perferates this
guy like a pin-cushion.

Sticking with the invasion of the Xavier mansion, I loved the use of Kitty
Pride and Colossus. Colossus in particular impressed me; the big guy just
walked into a room with two commandos firing tranq darts left and right, they
turn and fire, naturally darts bounce off his steely exterior. We then are
treated to a hall view shortly followed by two commandos being tossed through a
wall. Colossus kicks ass.

From there, wolvy runs off with Rogue, Pyro, and Iceman. I like the additions
of Pyro and Iceman, though they could've used Bobby (Iceman) a little more.
Pyro's general bad attitude and eventual turn to Magneto's side was well done
considering how very little time they had to do it in. I especially liked
Pyro's little suburban rampage after Wolverine gets shot in the head and the
kids think he's dead- yes, you heard me, Wolverine can survive a gun shot to
the head- and that Rogue sapped and controlled his power to stop him was pretty
good (at least she got to use her abilities for something). Also a great touch,
when Rogue sees Magneto again she starts stalking towards him and begins to
remove her glvoes, she got stopped before she could reach him, but great stuff
none the less.

There were a lot of little humorous bits in this movie, too many to really list
off.

Magneto and Mystique were a fun pair to watch, I particularly enjoyed
Mystique's trick for getting that crotchety-refrigorator-decoration (Magneto)
out of prison. She drugged one of the guards and injected at least a couple of
pounds of iron into his blood. Magneto extracted this iron from him and formed
what little he had into his metal balls of death and the extremely thin iron
disc upon which he flew away. Very kewl stuff indeed.

Mystique's little "love scene" with Wolverine was also impressive. As a friend
pointed out "wow, imagine that one woman you could never possibly get bored
with" (well, it's true, sorry). In case you haven't seen it and you're reading
this anyways, don't worry Wolverine doesn't fall for mystique, she's just an
uber bitch.

Anywho, where was I. Ah, yes, Lady Death Strike played by Kelly Hu. She had
like no lines, but her fighting was just awesome. As someone, somewhere said
"these fight scenes must've been coreographed in hell", and I believe it. The
fight between Wolverine and LDS is so damned viscious it isn't even funny.
Let's put it this way, she has a stilleto on each finger...... Wolverine was
literally stabbed hundereds of times in this fight (as was she). God, and the
way he kills her, let me just tell you now that I have a new "worst way to die"
now; burning to death while on E is now second on my list.

That's another thing though. I could've sworn that Wolverine was supposed to
have had a past with LDS, I know he had a history with some Japanese woman and
I could've sworn that Lady Death Strike was her. If that's the case..... well,
there goes that plot line.

And in this movie we get a sense of just how powerful the professor really is.
Seriously, in the second scene I was under the distinct impression that time
had stopped untill we overheard someone on the other end of a cell phone say
"hey, you there?"..... Xavier stopped every single person in a crowded public
place (museum i think) from so much as moving. That and the main plot,
revolving around a second Cerebro unit and using Xavier to turn it into a
weapon of genocide (not mass destruction). I had no idea he was so strong.
Throughout the comix, cartoons, and first movie I'd always heard people
commenting on Xavier's incredible power, but I hadn't really believed until
this one. Damn.

Nightcrawler and Storm; was nice to see the writer's utilize Storm a bit more
and give a hint at just how strong she is (controlling the whether is a VERY
impressive ability). I don't really recall Nightcrawler being so impressive in
the comix, cartoons, or anything, but I can live with it, he was awesome (gotta
love a white hosue invasion).

Now onto something that dives into the next movie: The Dark Pheonix. Damn, I'd
read a bit about them hinting at Jean Grey's future plot line, but I didn't
think they would go this far. Her power really picks up and referances are made
to her "dreams" and her eyes do the little "flame thing" from time to
time...... I was really, really surprised that they would push the Dark Pheonix
story this much. Though I did like the shot of the pheonix beneath the lake at
the end of the movie, and having Jean end the film with Xavier's monolgue from
the beginning of the first film was a really nice touch.

A truly impressive super hero movie. IMHO this takes the cake for super hero
movies, hands down. Not spiderman, not supeman, not batman, not dare devil,
none of them compare to the X-Men and their second film X2: X-Men United.

Btw:Jubilee was in the movie.she was one of the children who got caught.also in one of the last scenes with patrick stewart she is the indian looking girl:feather not dot:sitting next to him with the huge gold hoop earings.
also when storm opens the cell she says :"jubilee are you alright?"

OK, I realized I made this point about 15 posts ago, but I was busy...

When I say that most comic book movies fail, I don't refer to the money they make or the fan base it generates. I'm talking about quality of film-making. Otherwise we'd have to agree that Pokemon was a great film 'cause it made a lot of money and millions of kids went to see it.

What usually happens is the director tries to establish every ounce of history and storyline into a single film, as if they're trying to catch-up everybody who has never read the comic. It ends up being 'rushed,' to me, and it doesn't allow the actor/s to really act.

-Tim Burtons' "Batman" is still among my favorite adaptations, as well as the 2nd sequel. Both had great actors, and a somber overtone, which is what Batman needed. He is a dark hero. After that, the other movies kinda go downhill.
-Superman, for the time it was made, still has some fairly neat F/X. And it even generated decent sequels. Not sure how they did at the box office.
-Blade is another film that was true to the comic and had superb casting. I loved Kris Kristoferson as "whistler."
-I will also make an honorable mention to Judge Dredd. While Sylvester Stallone is not the greatest actor, when it called for someone with limited verbal skills and a stong jaw, he fit very well. The nice thing about Dredd comics is there's not a lot to catch up on. A minute or two of narration and the stage is set, you don't waste half the film introducing people.
And I would be remiss if I left out little known comics such as The Crow. Certainly one of the best out there. And I'll probably catch Hell for this one, but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. (C'mon, they were just fun...)

Now then...
-Spawn was just a proving ground for the CGI team. Which was well done, mind you, but it had a very rushed plot.
-Spiderman was OK, they were true to the story, just enough F/X, except the Green Goblin's costume will forever remind me of a Power Rangers episode. That kinda ruined it for me
-Punisher was OK, but I wouldn't have cast Dolph Lundgren

I still haven't seen Daredevil, and Hulk hasn't come out yet, but I have high hopes for those two...

Now I'm forced to wonder, who's voice would you assign to Hobbes?

I saw this movie last night with friends, and as others have already warned about spoilers I'll forego that message...

DaiTenshi, that was my exact reaction to the movie when I saw it. Wolverine has always been my favortie character (Yes, I was a comic geek when I was a kid), and it was so rewarding to see him cut lose in this movie. It had to be the best part of the movie when I realized he was really going to just kill everyone he could in that scene They finally did his character justice. They never called him Weapon X though, which kinda bugged me, and they didn't tie in Sabertooth to the project either...

I was disapointed by lady deathstrike though... Did they even mention her name? I only heard her referred to as Yuriko. And to clear this up, Logan was married kinda to this one oriental woman in his past, but she was killed by a poisonous knife. Yuriko, however, was the daughter of the man who came up with the process to put adamantium on bone, thus she blamed Logan for her father's death. In the comics this is resolved when Logan's metal is forcefully removed from his bones by Magneto in the New X-Men #25. (See, told ya Im a dork)

Funny, Remy LeBeugh was the only name I immediatly recalled from that list too... maybe because Gambit is just such a smooth mother who can blow stuff up with style Notice Hank McCoy was the scientist interviewed on TV as well in one scene (Pre-blue-haired beast I guess).

Nightcrawler was done very well. The White House scene was just awsome as hell. I was surprised as well by the ammount of forshadowing they did with Jean... As soon as I saw her eyes light up the first time I was like "Hell yeah here it comes", but I'm glad they decided to follow the actual storyline from the comics more with that. Obviously Phoenix will be the next saga. They didn't give it away too much at the end, and most people just overlooked the shape in the water, but anyone who knows the comics should have caught the fire-bird shape. I can't wait to see X3... I really hope they do as much justice to the Phoenix as they did to Wolverine and Nightcrawler in this one.

Oh and Colosus... That was cool. As soon as I saw a big Russian lookin dude I knew something was gonna get destroyed...

I wasn't a big fan of the first one... I thought Wolverine came off as a pussy in that one... They did a much better job on this one. Much better. I am pleased. And can't wait for Hulk... that just looks sweet.

Excellent question....

The person would have to be cheery, yet a bit cynical (Calvin can do that to a person)...He would also need to have that 'brillant teacher that works best with a bright, but difficult, student aspect'....Hmmmm, still thinking....While the character needs to be relatively young, a nice touch of wisdom would be needed...Hobbes is a wise sage at times....Race could play an issue...

Colossus was the guy who generated the metal sheathing on his entire body when the soldiers invaded the mansion.

The girl who was screaming was Siren which is kind of surprising they put her in the movie but left Banshee (her father) out.

Kitty Pride (aka Shadowcat) was "the little girl who can walk through walls".She was also in the first movie.

Jubilee (who's full name is Jubilation Lee) was the girl at the end of the movie with the really big round earrings.Her mutant power if I remember correctly was the ability to create blasts of light kinda like firecrackers.

Remy Labeau (bka Gambit) who I think it is safe to say that they are dieing to add to the series because he is one of the most popular X-men ever.If he isn't in the 3rd he will definitely be in the 4th.If the series makes it that long.His mutant power is the ability to charge objects with kinetic energy.Normally in the comics he does this with playing cards that he uses as throwing bombs.

Hank McCoy (aka the Beast) was the scientist who was on the TV when Mystique seduces and drugs the security guard.He was born with superhuman strength and agility.

I am not sure if the kid with the blue tongue or the one who was changing the channels were originals from the comics.I don't ever remember anyone similar to them.

I can't help but agree with Prometheus to an extent about this movie.Don't get me wrong I liked the first one as well as I also liked this one but there are some things I just didn't care for.

Personally I think they are pushing the Phoenix saga way too soon.There is a lot of story that is being skipped over in the rush to include Phoenix.I mean what about the Sentinels, Apocalypse, the X-tinction Agenda, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Mr.Sinister, the White Queen, the Brood, etc, etc.Lots of characters that play a big part in the X-universe are being skipped over.

Also when are they gonna make Rogue the true ass-kicker that she is in the comics?

Alas while they might not appease all the comic book enthusiasts I still feel they are doing a respectable job converting the series to the big screen.

I just think they would do better by exploiting other parts of the comics before getting into the phoenix saga which should cover a whole movie by itself.

I found that rushing things ruins plots for those of us that know the real histories.

Siryn was the screaming girl.

It's a pity they didn't use Colussus more, but then again he and Wolverine would've won the entire battle. Heck he could've without Wolverine. But that would not have been as interesting I guess. Sorry, but I would have had Rogue take the kids out and used the really strong indestructable guy to beat up SWAT members.

Rogue is an ass kicker in the comics because she permanently stole powers from one of the Ms Marvels early in her career. That'd be tough to deal with in the movie.

Someone mentioned not knowing that Prof X was that powerful. The Cerebro unit had a lot to do with him being that powerful. But to be honest they tone down everyone from their comic levels.
Case/point: Wolverine would barely have been slowed down by a small bullet to the head. In the movie he was knocked out for a minute.
