I don't see the point of death threats if they are going to end the world. Seems a bit ironic...

Oh well out with a bang I say.

A couple of balls short of a full cascade... or maybe a few cards short of a deck... we'll see how this all fans out.

We're 6 hours past the ignition of the LHC at C.E.R.N. and we're still here - you feel any different? Does it look any different?

No.

It reminds me of Dec. 31. 1999 vs. Jan. 01. 2000 - all I noticed is my (self induced) hang-over...

And now I'm really looking forward to the next date/deadline: 2012...

well boo hoo to all the doom mongers out there, if they had read into the testing procedure they would know that they would only test the particle beams one way then the other end of test..........it will be some time before they actually collide the particles, it just seems the religious factions deemed this creation a sin and the end of all humanity.

Yup - but don't worry all you fraidy-cats, the doom could be here any time in the next 2 years as they gradually turn up that big red dial!

Indeed - i believe it's 4 years until it reaches full speed collisions...

So 2012 - prepare yourself for yet more no-news stories, non-attributed "scientific" claims of black hole creations and religious nutcases getting pissy about creation.

Dr steven hawkins made a statement by asking the public "how would one fill a black hole?"

he was later shacked when one reply to him was "with a f*c**ng huge black *ock" grin

the death threats are only because if we destroy the world there wont be any more religions or taxes, and we cant have that!!!!

So apparently, some hackers in Greece hacked into the computers at LHC and left a warning message of the hole.

haha, nice.

personally i think creating a black hole and destroying our planet would be the coolest way that we could do it. after all, creating a black hole would be a pretty crazy scientific break through, of course, i doubt there'd be a party to celebrate it haha.

Not pop culture, major science (physics, nuclear and particle).

It is a major (27km long) new particle accelerator that has recently been turned on. Well, one beam has been turned on. The next is scheduled for next month sometime.

Of course, some people not waiting to actually find out the facts and so on have been worrying that the turning on of the machine would create a black hole that would destroy the Earth.

humm - just got aware that "turning on that thing" and "colliding particles" actually is not the same... it might take some time (after they switch it back on) for the first collision to actually happen...

(that or I'm totally misinformed - in which case I'm asking for correction)

They got as far as throwing some protons around the thing... at this stage collision should occur in 2 months time or so.

**LHC stopped until spring next year to save costs. (Autumn for those in the southern hemisphere!)

Shattering news, eager awaiters. Another few months of existence, nay sayers, soak it on up. smile

If you want extra information, try searching around for "quarks" or "higgs boson" that should yield some interesting reading. smile
