23-year-old girl injured during the fire-show at the opening of the second International Olympiad "Vostok-Zapad" ("East-West").

According to preliminary data provided by the Journalist Investigation Agency (AZHUR), the girl was spinning triple-poi and her clothes caught fire.

According to the medical press-centre, the girl got burn-shock and burns of 40 to 45 % of her body. In grave condition she was brought to the Scientific Research

Institute of acute medical care and placed in after-burn reanimation ward.

The girl is in desperate and urgent need of donor blood - at the present treatment stage she needs 1 litre of blood plasma per day. Any blood group will do.

Thats terrible - I hope that the healing process is a painless as her doctors can make it.

And shown by those pictures (which are terrific), I'm sure that she will be missed in the fire scene.

Another timely reminder that all fire performers should know first aid AND donate blood because you never know when you'll need it.

Just for the knowledge of everyone.

The first video is the long version which shows the reprocussions of the whole thing (putting her out and taking care of her, to her walking out of the arena).

The second is the same video editted into a newsclip.

I couldn't get the 3rd to load.

The 4th wasn't a video but a russian article for me.

It's such a horrible thing to have happened.

Alhimik, do you have more details that could help members here? What was the costume made of to burn so quickly?

What she the one spinning or did she walk into someone spinning?

My heart goes out to Kseniya, her loved ones and her family.

Girl Set on Fire During Fire Show in. St. Petersburg
Now Ksyusha is balancing between life and death
By Irina Brikina 23.04.2008

A posh fire show at the opening of Martial Arts Olympics, that has ended in St. Petersburg these days at sports complex “Peterburgsky” was near to a tragedy. A 23-year old Kseniya Ivanova was on the scene with sp called ‘fire snakes‘ when suddenly spurts of flame blazed up on her legs. Fire flared up her back. The girl tried to slip backstage unnoticed not to spoil her colleagues’ performance.

Assistants who were nearby tried to put out the blaze. When the doctors came rushing Kseniya was conscious. She could even walk to the ambulance car.

Doctors of resuscitation department of Dzhanelidze Emergence Ambulance Research Institute diagnosed ambustion of 45% of body surface.

- Yesterdy she started coming out of shock. They make her pain killer injections all the time now. – girl’s boyfriend, Stepan Martov is saying – “The critical period shall last for a mpnth. Doctors say if she lasts it – she’ll survive”.

The girl has her legs burnt, her stomach and back also affected. She needs donor blood now. Loads of it.

- Ksyusha (as family and friends call her) needs at least five donors a day to survive – Stepan sais – We search for the people who are ready to help. Their blood type doesn’t matter. You can give your blood to exchange it in blood bank for the type required’.

Stepan’s relatives and friends have already donated their blood. But that is not enough.

How could this have happened? According to Stepan, Ksyusha was working fire shows for over four years. She was never afraid of anything she was considered a true specialist.

Colleagues think of Ivanova as of true specialist
(picture taken from family archive)

- Every fire show artist with years of experience has this risk of getting burned. – Alexander Tsaregorodtsev, “Gelios” Fire Theatre Director sais. – Of course, we try to minimize it. But this is what work with fire is! When someone is performin with snakes a slight touch on the costume is enough for the combustible to get into the fabric. If the costume is not made of leather, the clothes become a burning wick.

Although the reason to the tragedy might have been different. According to Alexander, they’ve had cases of people burn injuries due to bad kerosene quality.
-
Ksyusha and Stepan were supposed to get married in two months. Stepan believes that his beloved will certainly get well.

Hey everyone

Ive emailed the above people to ask for clearer directions of how to donate money from the UK as im not 100% sure from the above text.

This is clearly a devasting and life changing incident for this poor girl. Some of you may or may not know me and what I do as a day job? I work for the Fire service so can vouch that this will take months/years to fix..... if at all.

My thoughts are with this girl.

I can see the biggest problem with the language barrier here is getting non Russian speakers who want to donate enough assurance that the accounts WILL be used for her assistance only and it's not a scam from a quick thinking ambulance chaser.

It gives you such a wake up call when you hear about the poor people like Ksyusha who have suffered for their art.

And just goes to show that none of us should ever take what we do for granted and that we should always ensure the up most care as well.

All the best for a quick and painless recovery!

thats terrible, i guess thats the risk we take.

i dont understand what its saying about blood donations, 'any blood type will do' sounds like they're trying to use it as general publicity for more people to donate, not that thats a bad thing i guess, and it also means more people that dont know their type might go and help.

frown How terrible. Looked like a pretty professional show, I dont understand how these things can get so out of control. Was she on stilts? It looked like they were unbuckling her from stilts in the first vid I guess she could have been hard to put out if she was on stilts.

Pyrolific, it does say in the article that she was on stilts at the time.
They also appeared to be metal, so I am wondering if any part of those heated up when the costume caught fire and made them more difficult to take off.
However, this would probably be a likely reason as to why she didn't do a stop, drop and roll as mentioned by Feeb.
I couldn't imagine doing a drop and roll safely from stilts while on fire. eek

Thinking of it still gives me shivers.

ah. i got confused cause you can choose to donate plasma seperately in australia. if thats what was needed they could have asked for that, but i guess like i said before the more blood in the system the better for all patients.

A terrible incident... Just terrible...

Please don't let this womans pain be for nothing, let it be a reminder to all of us that fire is NOT completely predictable, and the potential is always there for horrific injuries to spinners AND those around them.

ALWAYS be fully prepared for it getiing out of control and have the equipment there to deal with it or don't lit up at all...

Also, finally, while it may go against everything we learn as aentertainer, DO NOT think of the show if you feel you may be in trouble. Scream for help at the top of your lungs and let your safeties know immediately.

Excuse my language, but bugger the show if you or anyone else is in danger...

bloody good point, hadn't thought of that, i really do hope shes alright and didnt mean to suggest any disrespect toward her

surely in this sort of professional situation, fire safety is of upmost importance, if i were juggling fire on props which prevented me from putting myself out, i would want someone nearby with a fire blanket.

Please please please tell me this IS something people thinking about before throwing flaming things around their heads... doesnt bear thinking about!

Also, i would imagine gaining some kind of compensation from insurance companies, the company hiring her who clearly didnt have fire saftey in place (or enough at least) would be far more profitable than scouting forums

i wish you the best of luck i really do, just trying to look at this logically.

My best wishes to that girl. I was almost hospitalized for a burn on my leg but was able to avoid a skin graft and attend daily wound care. That experience was the most painful in my life and I have learned from it. She has a long road ahead of her and I feel really sorry for her.

It did look like a professional show and you can see the safeties running around. We all can get a bit complacent from time to time but then it's up to chance. I learned to never make a fire prop you cannot bail out of quickly and stilts fit the bill. If only they had a CO2 fire extinguisher they could have put her out really fast instead of patting her down with wet towels.

Our fire group works with very large amounts of fire and our safeties are well versed in fire extinguishers. Done right someone could have put her out while she was still on her stilts and before the fire grew.

Everybody check your props and costumes. Honor her and respect her by not taking her accident for granted.

Is there any new info of the types of burns she received? I prey that they are mostly second degree or "full thickness" burns and not 3rd or "Deep full thickness. Each leg is 18% of an adult body and it looks like the legs were the most affected. My burn was from long exposure to heat which made for a 3rd degree burn. I currently have a good sized second degree on my arm form a show on saturday. In comparison the second degree burn is painfull but it will heal fast without much scarring. They can manage pain in the hospital I just hope she recovers fast without lasting effects. I really hope she comes back to fire with a great story to share.

Best wishes
