Posted:heya folks,

a question, im spinning a fair while now using both sock poi and fire poi and as of late iv changed to using rope poi for practice, but im starting to notice my hands/skin are fairly chaffed and im wondering if you fine people have any ideas on creams etc? i have the usual advise of "just grit and bare through it and you will grow calluses(like when learning guitar) but just wonderif you have any other ideas, the main areas are my index fingers, thumb side between my middle knuckle and the knuckle nearest the finger tip, this sounds silly but im curious smile

Posted:I have the same experience (I guess) and FOR ME it has also something to do with the amount of fluid I take in (not enough to keep my skin protected).

Other than that I am considering to tape my fingers before spinning, as I frequently get blisters and the skin flakes off.

In Germany we got some remedy, which literally translated would mean: "Deer tallow". You use it to prevent the skin from cracking (in the desert), for crack propagation or as care for leather...

One note though, don't let any callouse get to tough this can just cause them to tear.

I'm more thinking in relation to rowing than spinning, but hardening your hands is the best thing to do. Temporary relief with ointments is fine, but don't overuse the ointments til your hands stay soft.

Posted:talc or chalk are fantastic suggestions. Polarity beat me to it! :P

I've always prefered e45 cream to neutragena, but would definately recommend not overusing it. If you soften the skin on your hands too much, it seems to make them more likely to blister, and even for the blisters to tear. I'd only recommend using it when your hands are particularly dry and in danger of cracking. Try not to use handcream for about 12 hours before spinning also.

Alternatively, change your poi?! wink

Good question though.. I have usually taken some level of hand ouch for granted and just stopped before the rubbing turns to blister... and avoid heavy fire poi.

Posted:Probably not a good idea, as meths can be absorbed through the skin, and methanol is rather toxic.

That said, Keith Richards looks like he bathes in the stuff biggrin

E45 is ~25% paraffin, with Lanolin (wool oil) and preservatives. linky

I'm sure we can all find paraffin, now we just need to pet some sheep too.

Posted:Splinter! Dude, just go to Lush down by the Molly Malone and buy "Ultra Bland"

It's a tenner for a small tub or a score for a big one. I swear by it. Don't put it on a burn if it's fresh but otherwise it really reduces healing time and softens your skin nicely.

Neil uses thicker ropes which are less prone to cutting. Text him about it. For ages I was just going into Lush the day after a show coz the stuff costs so much, they always have ultra bland on a tester stand {^_^} Student life FTW!

It contains: peanut oil, rose water, beeswax, honey, fresh iris extract, glycerine, rose absolute, tincture of benzoin and some unpronouncable chemicals.

But it's sexy.

Posted:I'd say use a nice moisturiser before doing a show, wash your hands thouroughly afetrwards using swarfega or something similar, then apply more moisturiser.

Toughening of the hands will still take place but without build up of callouses, you just won't blister as much.

Saying that though, it has in the past reached the stage where I have had to use sandpaper to remove leathery skin buildups from the thumbside edge of my index fingers, as well as across my knuckles.

(combination of lots of steel working, firespinning and working in the garden )

The sandpaper worked though! ubblol
