Hi yes i have tried that link above but i dnt really understand that version of making the tradition thanks anyway , i think i need it to be more simple .

if you want simple, take some socks and put some tennis balls in them
if you find they arent heavy enough, then use the plastic bags fill them with rice and put them in the socks

You take about a large double handful of the wadding, then place it in the middle of a flattened shopping bag. ( I dont trim it to shape at all just take a normal bag and flatten it). Wrap the bag up around the wadding. At some point you need to stuff one knotted end the the plait down into the wadding so it comes out the top of the scrunched up bag. Make sure the bag is tight around the wadding and the plait then wrap more wool around the neck and tie off firmly. Trim the bag back so its a nice neat frill. You can also use plastic bags for stuffing and its easier with two people.

Umm... sounds like a fairly recent tradition. what would a Maori great-grandmother have used I wonder?
Have you approached traditionally trained Maori women to ask them?

Gabe, has anyone told you of the dangers of sock poi (and oven cleaner) The last (traditional ) set I seen was made from painted cloth.

How about.
I want to make a set of poi that looks a bit traditional. Like the ones all the lovely maori ladies in the burnt grass skirts use. Not really traditional but enough that if seen from a fair way away look a bit similar.

Can you join the local Maori club, see what they have and how they make them. I was shown by a moari lady how to do the 4 plait. Needs two ppl though. They look from a distance like shopping bags....meh. Im amazed at the skill it takes to dance sing do poi in time and still look like you are having fun like the maoris do.
