Is it too early to make a new staff goals thread? Well maybe, but I'm going to press on regardless...

So goals for 2008 please! Itemised if ya wants... I like itemisation.

1) Get rid of job, travel world spinning staff. biggrin
2) make super tech duo doubles routine.
3) Now that my knee is better, get back to the acrobatics + staff.
4) Now that my knee is better, learn better movement, and how it works with staff. (Post-wiggling proto-dance)
5) Find some outrageous contact moves to learn, that I haven't thought of yet and learn them. (I couldn't have imagined myself doing a head roll steve at this time last year.)
6) Perform better.
7) Go to circus school, or devote 2/3 months entirely to training. (Whichever comes first)
8) Don't let my knee get injured again.
9) Find some more illusions, or visit Simian.
10) Make those two new routines I've been thinking about.

I reserve the right to change these goals in january... tongue You can also reserve your right.

Can't wait for Chrimborg P.R.E.S.S.I.E.S!

1) caged contact
2) continue trying to build up basic moves with style, rather than geeking out and trying to slap style in later
3) more doubles patterns with staight sides (explore squares and triangles more then head for hexagons)
4) get better at contact
5)learn how to do doubles contact without pausing mid flow
6)more cheese!
7)go to capoiera or yoga lessons, or preferably both (yeah right like I'm going to have time for that...)
8)improve footwork
9) practise throws

10) [disclaimer: in the event that i should manage to get through all the above] get started on 3 sticks

post BJC update
1) yup iffy caged luceros and an iffy semi-caged matrix
2)nope, been geeking out... oops
3)yep: got my squares and triangles, starting on the hexagons
4) well, I know more stuff to do.. can't do it that well though so I guess its a no for now
5)hahahahaha..... no
6)so so... needs work
7)yep, capoeira was going well until I got tendonitis
8)hmmmm nope I think
9)yep, (thanks to rob's workshop) but need to make some more suitable staffs for chucking about
10)nope, not even close

oooh how do you cage a matrix confused
or is it just a matrix with your hands clasped above your head? otherwise surely your arms would get in the way.

A couple of balls short of a full cascade... or maybe a few cards short of a deck... we'll see how this all fans out.

8) Working on it, thanks to various physios.

1. groundwork, groundwork, groundwork.
2. headroll steve (yoink wink )
3. do less techy repetition in performances.
4. get more gigs abroad
5. learn to juggle 3 staffs (and 4 and 5..... eventually)
6. write a glow routine
7. learn butterfly kicks properly with a staff
8. re-write my contact routine so it fits to the track better.
9. get to america to spin with noel again smile
10. learn to use capital letters at the beginning of a sentance biggrin

1. Sort of, i blagged a sketchy horizontal ultimate roll (steve down to matrix down to legs, cartwheel so staff goes through legs then back up the other side for second half of steve matrix) a couple of weeks ago but ive been hurting a lot each time i try. so only 6/10.
2. Nearly. can do a neck roll head roll but the steve exit isnt quite there yet.
3. Check, did loads of performances for kids in India so concentrated on dancey short routines.
4. I just turned one down, does that count?
5. Check, long way yet to go with it though.
6. Slack. But plans are underway.
7. Define properly.... probably not really though.
8. Well i didnt take a copy of the track away with me so ive been performing to different music, so no.
9. Sorry Noel, might have to be next year (unless i can somehow get to burning man hmmm....)
10. Mostly.

time for another update, methinks...

doubles:

 Written by : Pogo69

1) continue to practise

yup yup... I've built a couple pairs of practice doubles with dowel, tape and some rubber stoppers; leave them lying around the place so I can play with ideas, whenever...

 Written by : Pogo69

2) make everything I do more consistent and sub-conscious

continues to improve; most of the basics are pretty seamless now and I can freespin with most of what I know, improvisationally, in a manner that is less a bag of tricks and more creating pretty patterns, all the time...

 Written by : Pogo69

3) learn more antispin doubles stuff

yup yup... the search continues... I've been putting a bit of time into playing with combinations of simple antispin/isolation stuff... got a lot of it to the point where I'm starting to be able to use the parts to create a brand new whole.

have also started to play with square shapes; staffs alternately parallel and perpendicular to the ground; basically with the staffs creating an L... interesting possibilities, I think...

 Written by : Pogo69

4) nail reverse flowers and put more work into antispin flowers

still continuing to improve... the muscle memory is there and I can move between forwards/reverse/opposite ok... but I still can't do a proper straight armed antispin flower...

 Written by : Pogo69

5) continue exploring and expanding on the simple things, like one beat variations, btb etc

Written by : my previous comment

ye, I have started on this... linking into parallel btb... then switching to whatever the same thing is called when it's not parallel... ummm, also started with one beat variations, one arm on top of the other (dunno what it's called)... lots of experimentation and lots more to come (meg's and some other misc vids will help me here if I remember to watch them)...

still playing with these, but not so much as other stuff... linking to the btb stuff a lot better...

contact:

 Written by : Pogo69

6) start practising... anything...

again, every now and then... I don't seem to be motivated towards contact all that much, mostly because I've not seen much contact that takes staff play where I want to take it; for me it's primarily all about the pretty patterns, with coordinated body movement being secondary, and I've not seen a lot of contact that demonstrates that... although, seb's fishtails vid is a BIG step in that direction.

 Written by : Pogo69

7) halo 360 smooth and consistent

ye, can pretty much keep this going whenever now... the occasional slip, but I can usually turn that into something too... odd how something that once seemed impossible, turns into something that you can feel every step along the way

 Written by : Pogo69

8) steves smooth and consistent

most of the time, ye... I haven't played with any variations yet, but the basic (what I think is officially called a half-) steve is down... in fact, I can do em sitting down some of the time...

 Written by : Pogo69

9) fishtails, at all

ye... right hand with a contact staff is solid... left hand is getting there... keep trying occasionally with the lil doubles, but while I can do the motion, I have no control over them

 Written by : Pogo69

10) play with staff more in general without hand contact

nah, not really

 Written by : Pogo69

11) if I get through the above, try and link a few moves with the wrist weave or similar

again... some... sometimes...

5) Club Contact is hard enough, but I have a ton of new things to learn from america... some of them aren't hard, but some of them might be... gotta learn em all...
6) Still working on it...
7) Well Quebec in 2009 looks promising, for a whole year. Plus, training is what you make it, I intend to mak everyday a training day...
8) JT in america gave me some good advice... will be using that too...
9) Maybe... quartertime is where it's at... isolation, is that the only illusion? that and the psi illusion...
10) It got made, I finished two now... one needs more work... and two or three more in the pipeline... I'm totally on top of that tomorrow...
11) Not done much on this, a little with Rob and Sam, but three things? It's so new to me, it's hard to grasp it fully yet.
12) Yeah, been working on the club juggling quite a lot. Tis good fun.
13) Club Contact routine. <- New Goal.

alrighty, then...

doubles:

 Written by : Pogo69

1) continue to practise

still on track; having a pair of doubles pretty much everywhere I go, helps. two sets in the car, one in the loungeroom against the wall; I even built a pair out of pens and sticky-tape at work; they're no good to spin, but enough to work out shapes.

 Written by : Pogo69

2) make everything I do more consistent and sub-conscious

again; still on track. was at a doof recently, where I spun fire a large part of the night away (till the sun came up, actually) and was quite comfortably doing most all that I know fairly seamlessly; all sorts of pretty patterns coming from freely improvised combos of simple anti-spin/isolation moves.

 Written by : Pogo69

3) learn more antispin doubles stuff

ye... been playing with more odd shapes... squares, parallel/perpendicular with the ground... L shapes... triangles... the odd pentagon (only brief play with that).

 Written by : Pogo69

4) nail reverse flowers and put more work into antispin flowers

yup yup... any direction regular spin flowers are mine... antispin flowers continue to elude me, predominantly because I haven't paid them any attention.

 Written by : Pogo69

5) continue exploring and expanding on the simple things, like one beat variations, btb etc

yup yup... btb, entry/exit is mine, also been playing with "huggies" (that's what I know them as in the poi world, even though I can't do them with poi, but dunno if it's named the same in doubles-land) and they're getting smoother, but I kinda suck at entry/exit.

7) halo 360 smooth and consistent

mine.

 Written by : Pogo69

8) steves smooth and consistent

mine; most of the time. half steve, anyway...

 Written by : Pogo69

9) fishtails, at all

mine, on the right... most always mine on the left. trying, every now and then to do them with the lil double staffs, so I can start integrating double fishies, but I'm very unsteady there.

taught myself a kickup to fishtail couple weeks ago.

 Written by : Pogo69

10) play with staff more in general without hand contact

very rarely.

to follow in the footsteps of those before me.

to acquire the competency of contact spinning and tossing that I can be burning them by summer

to be good enough that I can buy a collapsible staff for travel and not feel like I will muck it up in 2 days.

specifics:
-fishtails
-steves
-continuous frontside turning halos
-at least one skill in prayer formation.
-everything else that I forgot to write.

This will now be both possible and fun thanks to somebody's DVD being available now.
smile
Unfortunately this wont be accomplished on time. I've squandered my money on materials to build 2 5ft practice staves, a set of 3.5 ft doubles staff, levistick, hula hoop and my newborn daughter. :
love:
-fishtails: left hand is getting good but the right hand is still lacking a lot. On the plus, I've managed a kick up from either foot into a lefty fishtail. (really need to practice that right hand)
-basic full and half steves: yes, but not all the lovely variations I've seen Sandy and Meg do.
- No, but I've gotten a couple of bruises and blood spilled to show I've been trying. Not sure how I knocked myself in the nose still.
- does it count if its a throw coming out of back rolls?
-I dont remember if I learned anything else or not.

honestly, I love doing it, but I just cant practice like I should. There's someone (or two) else that simply distract me with being their adorable selves. ubblovewife and daughter ubblove

OGG! (Overall General Goals):
1: Developing some sort of routine with each number of staves from one through six.
2: Start working more acrobatics and swedish folkdancing moves into my staff flow.
3: Start practicing Parkour/Acrobatics + start dancing more (to make the above goal realistic).

Slightly more Specific Goals:

One Staff: Learn to do more tricky contact [censored], mainly Fishtails. And fill in the ridiculous holes in my contact staff book. Keep working on my flow overall, finding more smooth transitions between spin/antispin.

Two Staves: Learn more atomics! Learn/Invent more Hybrids! Start doing contact and juggling seriously. Do more staff-on-staff contact.

Three Staves: Buy staves that don't have Isis wicks i.e. death. More Staff-on-staff/Devilstix stuff and more throws. General improvement of flow and stability. More crazy spinning stuff.
(Maybe someday I'll attempt three staff contact...)

Four staves: Buy four short staves, practice the basics a lot! I suck at four staves.

Five staves: Quite simply Lots and lots of quintuple cross practice.

Six staves: Step A: Buy six tiny little staves, Step B: Fire away!
Experiment with more isolation possibilities and figure out how to do the six-staff chaotic equivalent to antispin. Figure out which hybrids make sense and which hybrids only look like mishmash.

So yeah, we'll see how that goes smile

And my DVD is finished now. total Win!

three months progress... not bad... how's everyone else?

1-4 = Yep, done.

4) dance more, yeah, more and more.
5) hard things - still not found anything super hard. But been practising a lot of stuff recently... next year, there might be something ridiculous.
6) perform better - been thinking about this a lot. Had to do my routine a couple of times this year, it's okay. I know more things about training for performance, which is nice.
7) 3 months of training: fail on this, with two months left in the year. If I didn't have a dvd to make... but I'm getting some interesting training in, just not how I expected it.
8) no injuries: win
9) illusions: maybe... I think I found one.
10) two routines: with the losing of the notebook one has beens et back, bt the other is in progress... so I say win.
11) club manip: I love it. Closer to getting a handle on it.
12) club juggling: yeah win on this too, I keep finding new patterns that are really obviously what I want to do.
13) club contact routine? No not yet... getting there, but not yet.

Club contact looks strange on video thou.

Brandizzle? Are you brendan from eugene?

---

So at least for me, being pretty much good on my previous goals... gonna make some new ones and see if they relate...

1) Write more stuffs down about staff and contact.
2) Finish the 2nd DVD.
3) Do more fire.
4) Make those glow videos I've been thinking about.
5) Make that contact video I've been thinking about.
6.1) FINISH the 'blind date' routine.
6.2) FINISH 'amazing machines' routine.
6.3) FINISH 'pachebels canon' routine.
7) Think more on writing down ideas and choreographies for multiple people.
8) Work out doubles in my head.
9) More club contact. + Club Routine.
10) Make a movement workshop.
11) Be more like Wes Peden.
12) Go to the CJC.
13) Learn Handstands and Aerials.

Wow, its still 2008, isnt it? Its been a long year and I am finally getting comfortable with the basics of contact staff:
1-horizontal and vertical steves: yes
2-angel rolls: sort of. Not consistent enough for my taste.
3- neck rolls, from continuous to snes to jesus: yes! And very happy to be getting better at this.
4-kickups: kind of. I would prefer it if it were going straight into another contact move.
5-Fishtails: No. frown I have reverse with the left hand only. One day, Mr. Berger, one day.
6- I did actually purchase a fire staff finally and have successfully lit it without killing myself. Yay!

If I were to make any new goals it would be only these:
1- more consistency
2- head spins: just caught a few of these the other day
3- groundwork, not quite what Sandy and Noel do, but the transitional kind I see from MCP and Meast
4- more dance, more music, more of an actual routine or pattern.

I gotta give Ms. Meg a big thanks for all the visual inspiration and tutorials I used this year. If it hadn't been for her and ssooo many like her, I'm not sure where I'd be with staff.
