I've been playing this one lately, pretty much the same game, but with more obvious setting adjustment and the most catchy tune ever...

I've been playing a version of bubble shooter for the last two years.

Probably due to the (not-so) secret urge for destruction inherent in everyone... plus there's the satisfyingly "tactile" and "auditory" feedback...
what's not to like about it?! (apart from those monster ones which you need to jump on with extra weights/force to pop and then the "pop" isn't in proportion to the size of the bubble)

I got some bubblewrap in a package that I had shipped to me at work and there was bubblewrap in it. I gave it to my friend and she grabbed it, started popping it, giggling, and jumping up and down (literally) in the middle of the hallway,
Just as a group of touring applicants walked up.
I covered it nicely with: "Hey, if any of you don't fully appreciate the joy of bubble wrap, you have no business going into pediatrics!" That line brought down the house.

EDIT: AFterplaying solidly since I first made this post, time to go to Uni, I'm afraid. I'll leave it as is, and continue later.

Great recommendations, but nothing beats bubble shooter game, classic and addictive.
