I was going to use the word "Jedi" but I have mixed feelings about it.

And every time I think about this I think back years ago to Drew amazing and confusing an EJC workshop by doing a really crappy isolated buzzsaw. That was back when Jedi meant something. smile

So, what's new these days? What's cutting edge poi? What are the cool kids working on? Who's pushing the envelope? Are flowers still in? Are inversions the new isolations? What's ubergeektacular?

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

I've been thinking on poi juggling or puggling as I suppose meg would call it. using 3 poi instead of balls I believe meg posted somewhere a video of a guy juggling meteors. is juggling the new black? all the cool kids seem to be doing it ubblol staffs, clubs, balls who'll be the fitst hopper to post a video of juggling 3 or more poi?

A couple of balls short of a full cascade... or maybe a few cards short of a deck... we'll see how this all fans out.

ditto Acciaio was doing some bad-ass 3 poi stuff at UberParis - like Matt's wibbling but with lots of contact poi thrown in to.

I still maintain whip-catches/tosses are uber-tech.

Hyrbid-shapes and lego-poi is uber-[censored]-hard (Which is why Ronan does it)

Relative isolations are fun and hard

Oh, and movement over tech is currently firmly in favour with most spinning authorities smile

i've been trying some of the whip catches durbs did at PLAY, i managed to do the one he tried at the end of his routine a few times.
contact poi is very techy but i never got past propellors and kick ups.
a cool combo i came up with is a kick up to whip catch.

Dunno what this classifies as, thought of this other day, gave quick try but havent really put time into it; having your poi come off your wrist by attaching it to a bracelet or something, then you go your hands free to twiddle something on your fingers, i had a lighter that glows damn nice under uv which i was using to check it out with. Could be cool with flames i think, having fire poi extend from your arms then having a very mini fire staff between your fingers. Your poi moves would be a bit limited and my co-ord on left side is still way to bad to do it with both arms. Anyway i thought it would look cool, if i have time ill try come up with something.

Practise makes Poi-fect :P

Im really into poi juggling (or Joi as i like to call it) and wibbling at the moment. There are loads of different wibbles and throws that are uber hard. Also inversions are rocking my world. My favourite recent one being turning atomic barrel rolls. Ooh Atomic stuff too, loads of fun.

but stop hijacking the topic :P

also a lot of throws(expcially body throws are a lot unexplored and very frustrating and difficoult to learn...

and poi body rolling and 1 poi contact moves sometime are really impossible...

Antibrids are the new hybrids... I dunno everyone is going different directions now. I really like the idea of making movement/dance and tech work together. Use your movement to do the tech moves, right?

mini meteor poi things are pretty fun - not especially new but very fast wraps using, say, both wrists and with out holding the poi is very fun and ive only seen one other person doing it - been kinda outta the loop though so who knows... general throws are always fun and hybrids are the way forward

Tech + movement = !!! It's been a style that I've been advocating since I started spinning. It's great to watch more and more tech+movement folks come into existance. Stalls and flower/fountains are another thing that I'm absolutely loving right now! Alot of poi head connection stuff, probably due to recently starting back up with double staffs and really getting into choochooisms.

As far as poi juggling goes, somewhere in these forums you can find a couple of really amazing poi juggling vids. One is a clown guy that uses meteoresque poi for juggling (no actual poi spinning, but really amazing). I think you can find that one in Drews video blog thread in the vids section. The other is of a guy name Kev (I believe) and I think they were calling it "poigling". He does an amazing job at it and it's well worth trying to find. It's been quite a while since I've seen them tho, so my memory of them may be a bit misperceived.

Good thread, hope to read more..

Peace,

When I first saw that an advanced section had been made, I assumed it was a place where you could lock Rev, Arashi and Bluecat away whenever they got too technical.

Most of my tech moves at the moment are coming out of stall switches (changing your stall from up to down, left to right or anything else for that matter with no spin). Combining this with floats gave me a very nice horizontal butterfly float which you can swith at each end and take back without the need to spin out. I've also recently been playing with using stalls to change planes in many different ways.

You can spend hours playing with minutes!

I've been working on butterfly flower to throw to reverse arms to catch and repeat for ages... It's just so possible and yet hard as hell =)

So... Flower throws =)

What is poi lego ?

Flower throws! I would love to see a video of that one. Im imagining counter-weighted poi being slung simultaneously while tangled and creating mini flowers all while in an arc, up and down.

Ok, now that I have started playing with them, I am loving whip catches and hyperloop catches. Im doing airwraps behind my back, over my head, under my leg, etc and then letting go of one poi to toss it up in the air and either catch the free poi or try and whip catch it in mid air again. So far, Ive only managed to do 2 whip catches like that in a row, though. Aiming for 5!

Thing is, if you do a tangled toss and catch, you have the freedom to pivot on one foot and rotate in any direction before catching. So, theoretically, I can combine it with more dance-oriented movement.

Not that I've progressed to that point yet.....

Well I don't imagine flower throws as tangles, but that'd be kick ass as well.

I've kinda realised tho that the effect wouldn't be almost any different at all if i stand in wallplane and do this instead of wheelplane so that makes it a bit easier.

One-handed infinite hyperloop flower would look nice if you could keep it clean...

I'm still playing with whip catches/tosses - they're about oooooo 67.9% reliable smile

Managed 3 continous whip tosses at lunch today - so i've set myself a vague goal of 5 whip-tosses, but that's going to take a while...

Ivè played onehanded butterflys and where they go same direction in the same hand (don`t know what it`s called) since I started with poi more or less. Now I reached the point where I can use one hand as two hands and split the motion to each one of the poi.
For example I can spin both forward in one hand, stall one of them and let it hang still while the other one keep spinnig and then I can do flowers, turns bhb while one is hanging still.
Doesn`t sound very cool but it looks weird, it´s like one of the poi spinnig by itself and the other doesn`t move at all.
Ahhhh I can`t explain it, just sound stupid biggrin

One other thing I found is a beatswitch (as I call it biggrin ) but in between spirawrap on one hand while you move your arms in antispins, looks amazing.

Also two handed spiralwrap that goes in and out a hybrid and in again and so on, also look really wicked, thechaninging between the spinning point looks so good, like slow motion for two seconds on one of the poi.

Yeah yeah im just babbling biggrin

Meet me up and have a spin I will be traveling everywhere, first out Thailand offcorse, tell me if you know any spinners anywhere!

Some crazy stuff there Thomas. I really like some of the things you explain. Particularly interested in those hybrid spiral wraps.

I'd have to admit not doing anything really crazy other then trying to perfect my Polyrythmic hybrid weave. It's not tight enough yet =)

I really want to have more crazy people to play poi with. Are you staying in Sweden long enough to attend NPC this year ?

so, as a direct result of some serious 'poi - the game' play, the following has been happening;

solid quartertime - crosses and weaves
loads of fun with barrel roll fountains, with stops.
horizontal inversions.
extremely wrong weave - barrel rolls galore.
really geeky conversations about the nature of polyrhythm, and the concept of zero.
butterfly parallel time hybrids (thanks ronan)

mmmmm.

using stalls in polyrhythms - can be really dull as a 'answering the vcriteria' but also really interesting, especially in horizontal.
