Posted: So I've heard that the term Kiwi is an offensive slur, I've also heard that it is a title that is looked at with pride by NZers. I dont get it, has it taken on the conotations of Nigger, they can call themselves that but no one else can. Please explain. Also if anyone happens to know the orgin of the term please post. thanks.

well, if it's you in trouble, it's probably something you started and therefore something you deserve, so I'll be all like nana on the sidelines unless it starts getting too nasty and then I'll come and rescue you. I'd do the same for anyone ubbangel

Got your white Charger ready to rescue Rouge?

But...

Its all about sheep. You had those rough wool smelly ones and had merino envy. Now you have all the superfine merinos and all the carpet sheep and we have dirt as our sheep all had to be eaten (like your Moas)
But years ago you had to go all wideblade and export all your shearers who could shear faster due to wide blades.
But since there are no sheep (or spoons) in Australia all the shearers are now miners.

. Plus you have Mount Doom and Xena. We Aussies now have Mt Doom envy and wish we had scantily clad movie stars. We just got Nicole and Hugh in the Kimberlies.

Back to topic....Kiwi has never been a swear word and the Kiwis I have met have interesting

I wasn't ignoring the Maori - even they came to New Zealand "recently" - sure more than "a couple" of hundred years ago, but not the thousands of years of history that other countries have. There is also the Moriori's who are said to pre-date the Maori, but as far as I know there is still no evidence for this:

Err, sorry Valura but you're wrong on that one. The Moriori settled the Chatham Islands approximately 100 years AFTER the settlement of the mainland and they are most definetly related to Maori. DNA analysis of kiore (Polynesian rat) supports this. A detailed explanation of the various myths surrounding the Moriori and the susequent debunking can be found in chapter 4 of Michael King's "The Penguin History of New Zealand" (it's actually quite readable for a history book, I can highly recommend it).

I used to get excited about showing people our old building that were 200 years old. Doesn't really cut it with Europeans where their lav is that old.
